Carroll called on businessmen gathered to join the city in its efforts to achieve "healthy‘‘ growth and expansion in Waâ€" terioo. The city, she said, asks "each of you to assist in businesss growth . . .on your trips and when appropriate, we are asking you to be a contact person or ambassador for Waterioo. The luncheon, the first meeting of its kind in Waterioo, was hosted by the Waterioo Chamber of Commerce and the city‘s business development office. Based on the success of this venture, O‘Neil said other such gatherings will be held "‘periodically in the future, when we‘ve got something to say. "I‘m very encouraged by the support and interest shown," remarked O‘Neil. "A lot of coâ€"operation and assistance was offered." Their goal was to bring together politicians, city staff and local businessmen to share plans and ideas for the future of Waterloo. And, according to Gerry O‘Neil, Waterloo‘s business development director, that was an objective that was more than attained last week when 100 city officials and representatives from local businesses gathered for a luncheon meeting at the Ali Baba Steak House to discuss the Chronicle Staff Mon.â€"Fri. 8â€"5 Sat. 8â€"1 Medical Dental and Nursing Home Supplies. This, said Carroll, "will be our thrust for the future. . .together we can reach our mutual goals." *‘We will continue to plan with vigor for the expansion and development of our commercial centres, our industrial areas and our residential areas," Carroll said. "In general our plans will provide the environment for individuals and business to flourish, the space for growth, a freedom of choice, adaptability to change and, above all, liveability." As well, she said preliminary statistics provided by the regional assessment office indicate that even in the current economic climate, Waterioo will achieve at least a four percent increase in assessment this year. " A skilled, diversified labor force, two universities, the planned industrial and research park at the University of Waterioo, efforts to revitalize the core area, continued activity in residential development and a wealth of 450 acres of industrial land, Carroll added are all reason to be optimistic about the city‘s future. In her address Carroll painted a glowing picture of future growth possibilities for the city. ‘"Cities," the mayor said, ‘"are built by capitalizing on opportunities. We have broad possibilities for further economic growth in fields which have already contributed greatly to our progress but which also have potential in our future." ’l‘hepop\nationolwnerloogmbymorethuupercem in the ‘70s and Carroll said "there‘s no reason why our po_guhtion will not grow by another 50 be;éeili:)]-';;o;;:il Ie through your assistance it will be of great benefit to all of Stack A Shoif
