Other coâ€"op stations have had fundâ€"raising drives every year with tremendous success, so CKMS decided to pledge its growing lisâ€" tening public to their crucial cause. During the pledge week of Oct. 15 to Oct. CKMS is currently in the neighbourhood of $20,000 in debt. Alâ€" though it has met its loan payments regularâ€" 1y, most of this debt has amassed from the staâ€" tion‘s free entertainâ€" ment monthly FM Times, rising equipâ€" ment costs. Last January CKMS issued a 50â€"cent per term fee increase, which was the first in several years. The staâ€" tion generates all its own income, but mainâ€" tenance of quality sound has excellerated to such an extent, that the university station is having horrendous difâ€" ficulty covering itself financially. But the little station with the bright orange door is still feeling the financial pinch due to escalating mainteâ€" nance costs, and only CKMS listeners can help. CKMS recently launched a huge fundâ€" raising campaign givâ€" ing away all sorts of prizes including CKMS teeâ€"shirts, buttons, nuâ€" merous albums and concert passes and other merchandise to donors who phoned in with a fiveâ€"dollar pledge or more at cerâ€" tain times of the day, in financial support. local aiternative radio station, . is fiveâ€"yearsâ€" old this month. On Oct. 15 the Uniâ€" versity of Waterioo‘s radio station located in the Bauer warehouse, embarked in its second five years of broadâ€" casting. W Woei\“e\nwove‘a\\o\'\w“. They extend a warm thanks to everyâ€" one who donated, and pledges are still being accepted this week. The station‘s public profile, and on air proâ€" file, have improved dramatically, and reach a much larger segment of university students and other lisâ€" teners who appreciate CKMS‘ artistic and musical merit. Much of this acciaim can be attributed to CKMS® ultraâ€"enthusiasâ€" tic, music director Doc Any contribution will help enormously and allow CKMS to provide the best alternative programming. In the past year, CKMS has grown conâ€" siderably in a physical and fiscal sense, now having a paid staff of six. Doc Hight He maintains firstâ€" year university stuâ€" dents have been reâ€" cently exposed to newer music trends in high school and CKMS is the only local station that gives them the type of music they enjoy outside of reguâ€" far AM/FM programâ€" ming. *‘We expose our lisâ€" teners to progressive music and the good old stuff from the 60‘s and 70‘s without getting tasteless and repetiâ€" tive. It gives a historiâ€" cal perspective. We feature a great diffuâ€" sion of different music, spoken word, poetry and interviews (includâ€" ing one with Iggy Pop on the 29th). It‘s an artistic condition or naâ€" ture an FM station needs to exist," says Hight. Most of the programâ€" mers have been screened and trained by Hight and reflect his view on programming and music in general. We are fighting the music business on a ‘ground roots‘ level," says Hight. We are also the only station that exposes and supports fresh Canadian talent, like the $Spoons, Kinetic Ideals, Blue Peter, L‘Etrange, The Masâ€" terbeats or the Plague. It‘s your doliars that will help us to stay ‘the alternative.‘ With our diverse nature and arâ€" tistic freedom of exâ€" pression, on CKMS (924.5) you can always expect the unexpectâ€" From Chamber music, and jazz, to the best of British rock, and the newest in the progressive music scene, and live interâ€" views, CKMS provides a wealth of listening enjoyment. Hight, originaliy from Montreal, has been with CKMS since 1979, and became music director last Auâ€" *‘You have no choice. We offer the choice. The American music industry and culture in general is quite bland. They don‘t usually reâ€" lease a band, uniess they sound like someâ€" one else, a clone. It‘s almost incestuous." Hight says CKMS® alâ€" mostâ€"complete broadâ€" cast freedom of exâ€" pression is something other stations have lost or are rapidly losing, particularly CFNY, the little station that grew big in Brampton. ‘‘There is a problem in Brampton due to station politics and a creative selling out. They expect to broadâ€" cast from the CN Tower and their signal will be aimed specificâ€" ally at Toronto popuâ€" lus. We shall lose it and there will be no alterâ€" native if CKMS cannot support itself." _ %%,..
