Chronicle Staff Peter Danpells blows out of the start pedaliâ€" ing madly. It‘s the fifth race for him this weekend and he‘s going all out beâ€" cause after this one it‘s all over. The gruelling dirt track at Bingeman Park‘s BF Goodâ€" rich/CKKW Bicycle race has no pity on its young riders who spill from their bikes as hills and hairpin turns throw them for a tumâ€" ble. When it‘s all over, Danells, a native of Waterloo, takes the checkered flag to win his race. More than 250 Tuesday in Hamilton, the Condorsâ€"battled to a 1â€"1 tie with Mohawk College. The game, which was played on the artificial surface of Ivor Wynn Stadium was fast paced throughout with both ‘reams having excellent scoring chances. After a scoreless first half, Mohawk College scored at the 12 minute mark of the second half. Conestoga pressed after the goal and Manny Maciel tallied at the 21 minute mark to tie the score. The soccer Condors began to make their late season drive for a playâ€"off spot by gaining three of four points in two games. â€" e On Thursday, in a driving rain storm at Budd Park, the Condors defeated Sheridan College 1â€"0. The rain made the field slick stifling both offences. Finally, Conestoga‘s Tony DaSilva scored on a penalty as a result of a hand ball in the penalty area at the 29 minute mark of the second half. Conestoga‘s Mike Kalman turned in his best time of the year and finished third at the Durham College Invitational Cross Country meet Thursday. Danells won two races in Welâ€" land, another race earâ€" lier in the year in Kitchener and placed third in a race in Newâ€" market. "‘I‘ve been racing for about a year, but I‘m not on a team yet. There are a couple of good teams in Kitchenâ€" er but 1 would prefer to get on a team from Waterloo,"‘" he exâ€" plained shortly after receiving his trophy in Sunday‘s race. *"Dirt bikes are too expensive and too danâ€" gerous to drive and you don‘t get the exercise you do on the bikes, he said. For Danells, BMX racing is not only fun and challenging, it is good exercise. Danells gets plenty of exercise. *"*I practice every night at Chicopee," he said. ‘*Everyday I drive my bike all the way down there from Waterloo to practice. It takes me about half an hour to get there but it takes me about an hour to get home because I‘m usually really tired and it‘s all up hill." He estimates the round trip is about 25 miles. But all his hard work has paid off for him. Saturday in front of hundreds of people he sped past the pack and claimed his fourth firstâ€"place finish. He qualified in the final after running four qualifying races where he finished first in three races, second in one race and third in the other. "I got a first in the final and that is what counts," he said as he examined this newest trophy. It was frustration that first got Danells involved with BMX bikes and racing. It doesn‘t come cheap, he admits. Full protective gear costing hundreds of dollars, a good racing helmet and the BMX bike itself can go as high as $1,000 but cheaper versions are available. "I used to have a fiveâ€"speed bike and it kept breaking down all the time so I went to a smaller bike â€" without any gears. I started jumping over hills and riding in the fields and began to like it. It was a lot of fun so I got into racing." Danells says it‘s time for a new bike so he can Peter Danelis continue his winning ways next year. BMX racing is catchâ€" ing on in the Kitchenerâ€" Waterloo area after the weekend‘s races at Bingeman Park.
