Birch hopes system willm revive hockey Warriors ;. ze Vic MacBournie Chronicle Staff When Jack Birch left the McMaster Marllns to take on the duties as head coach of Waterloo Warriors hockey team he took a little someâ€" thing with him. It‘s a goal Birch says only attainable by adopting a defensive style of hockey. â€" And according to Birch it‘s that little something that is going to give Warriors a spot in this years‘ Ontario University Athletic Asâ€" sociation playâ€"offs. That defensive style will be taken right out of the arms of the Marâ€" It‘s called the Delta System and it‘s one that Marlins have used successfully for severâ€" al years under the guidance of former coach Bill Mahoney, now coach of the Adirondak Red Wings. Under the Delta sysâ€" tem McMaster gained the reputation of one of Canada‘s premier MARY JANE MEWHINNEY FIRM STAND REâ€"ELECT hockey teams and Birch is looking to gain the same reputation for Warriors. "McMaster certainly proved the Delta sysâ€" tem is the best system. It‘s the best defensive system 1 am aware of," he said. "What it is basically is a zone defence. The zone defence has cerâ€" tainly proved itself in other sports so why not do it in hockey?" The prime difference between the Delta sysâ€" tem and the regular style of hockey is the number of defenceâ€" men. In the Delita sysâ€" defencemen and only two forwards. "But with talented forwards the delta man One of the defenceâ€" men, the delta man, plays the slot. He paâ€" trols the slot when the puck is in his end and guards the center slot area when the team is on the offensive. He‘s usually the goal scorer for the team. The forwards are strong. Our defence reâ€" mains weak from last year, ‘"that‘s one of the reasons I think the Delta system is right for this team,‘"‘ he said. With 12 veterans re turning to training camp and 13 rookies breaking into the lineâ€" up, Birch says he has a good nucleus to work around. "Last year Warriors had approximately six games where they had 10 or more goals scored on them. My goal is to keep the goals down. If does not have to be the main scorer,‘‘ exâ€" plained Birch who said his forwards are as talented as any teams‘. The Voters‘ List for use in the Municipal Election to be held on Monday. At the delta spot Birch has Wayne Holâ€" den, Rick McKenney and Dan Blum. Holden and Blum are yeterans on the team and McKenney is billed as a very promising rookie. Back with Warriors this year are Dan McClean, Steve Borecâ€" sok, Blair McArthur, Rick Hart, Dan Beagan and Stu Hammond. Both golies Jamie Britt and Bill Humphreys REâ€"ELECT well as defencemen Bill Hodgson and Danâ€" joe McCormick. Other promising rookies are defenceâ€" men Wilson Cowan, 6‘2", 195 pounds who played for Midland‘s junior C team last year. Steve Crocker, who saw action with Waterloo Siskins last year is also impressing Birch. Birch is impressed with rookie Peter Crouse a 6‘1‘‘ 180â€" pound goalie who Birch expects to use quite regularly. The team averages around 5‘11" inches and about 185 pounds, a little small for Birch‘s plans to field a hitting team but big enough to work with.
