Hard to tell if this group had a good time... nick cam-ttooo. King Street rocks S t d ight Rick CampbeIl F Chronicle Staff Wow. Wasn't THAT a party! There wouldn't be any denials from the nearly 6,000 students and city residents who crowded an entire downtown block Saturday night for the University of Waterloo Federation of Students Street Dance. What started out as a fingers-crossed good idea mushroomed into Oktoberfest-type merrinient and ul- timately into an unforgettable out-and-out bash as overflow crowds thronged King Street between Erb and William, spilling out from the Waterloo Square beer garden onto streets, into hotels and along sidewalks where street vendors peddled food. souvenirs and balloons. It was a cool but perfect night weather-wise as damp weekend weather took a Saturday night siesta, bringing crowds out even the organizers were amazed at. "This has to be one pf the most successful events we've (Federation of Students) ever been involved in." said Si- moms. "We may have changed a few things but over-all it went quite well. We weren't expecting the number of people who showed up, so we had to pick up people for crowd control along the way. But ’with that many people. we'll come close to breaking even, our major costs were (rental of) the tent, washrooms, staging. Someone up there must be looking down on us," said UW Feds president Wim Simonis around 9 p.m. as crowds began to swell. Monday Simonis estimated the crowds at about 5,500 in the streets with another 500 or so heading to the hotels on the strip after capacity was reached in the beer tent. where taped music and the band Ken entertained. ”out your: Wt...
