For the most part written by Pink Floyd's lead singer Roger Waters. the narrative contained within and thematically linking the different musical numbers is seen as largely autobiographical. For the movie, Waters has creat- ed a screenplay that expands somewhat on the concept behind the album, reaching for greater social significance perhaps by at- tempting to parallel the madness of an individual with the insanity of society " a whole. While its reach far outdistances its grasp in this respect, the movie is not without considerable dra- matic impact through its blending of Pink Floyd's off-screen perfor- mance of the music with a mixture of live-action and animated scenes illustrating the lyrics. Because much of the movie is visually depicting the main char- acter's nightmares and hallucina- tions, intermingled with his actual memories. there is no straightfor- ward progression of events. This gives the picture a highly surreal and, at times. decidedly abstract quality. As weil,, the main character - Pink, a bumt-out rock star - is seen, for the most part. as such an unlikeable person - which is really the way he sees himself, of course - that it is very difficult for an audience to share any kind of emotional involvement in what is befalling him. Sometimes, too, there is difficulty in separating what is really happening to the No one should gqto lee tle movie Mephisto, this year's most- worthy Oscar winner as best foreign film. is a powerful dramat- ic study of the role of the individual - and, in particular. that of the individual artist - within a dicta- torship. or indeed within any soci- ety. The source for the movie's screenplay is a long-banned Ger- man novel of the Fame name. which was however, little more than a thinly veiled critical biogra- phy of Nazi State Theatre director Gustaf Grundgens. for a time author Klaus Mann's brother-in- law. Written in 1936. the book reflects Mann's personal vindictiveness towards the principal character that made that character almost a caricature of pure, unrepenting evil. truly the devil's servant. The movie departs considerably from this aspect of the novel, and makes tor a much more interesting character study of a man obsessed with the desire tor success and willing to make moral compm mlses to attain that success. in a some. he is almost an "everyman" t-utoo-etir.yg.ege.ty.s.gyt9.tt Mephisto is richly satisfying character and what is happening in his mind. 7 The portrayal of the adult Pink by Boomtown Rats lead singer Bob Geldof is, all the same. awesomely persuasive, and is strongly com- plemented by the performance of young Kevin McKeon " the boy Pink. The personality of Pink's mother is also quite well established by actress Christine Hargreaves, and the small role of a groupie briefly trapped inside a hotel room with the fismiture-smashing Pink is handled very realistically by Jenny Wright. Most characters, however. purposefully are little more than cartoon-like sketches. y The movie's director, Alain Parker, indulges in a lot of cinema- tie razzle-dazzle that occasionally seems a little suspect as to either its necessity or appropriateness, but which certainly keeps watching the picture far from being a dull experience. Animated sequences, especially, are strikingly imagina- tive and lively. There are probably only a couple dozen lines of actual dialogue throughout the entire movie. with the story being told primarily through the lyrics of the songs. Yet, as is often the case with rock music, it is sometimes very diffi- cult to understand the lyrics unless you are familiar with them before- hand. Visually, of course. much of the movie's action is self-explanatory. even when images do not follow one another in a logical, or realistic, sequence. The pictures restricted rating in Ontario is due primarily to a persistent aura of violence that is, however, not in the nature of the explicit carnage shown in the popular present-day "horror" movies. If this visualization of The Wall is likely a splendid turwon for the majority of Pink Floyd fans, it is as likely a total turn-off for the general run of movie-goers. figure. although the particular times and society in which this man lives make his congramlses look more heinous, at least in re- trospect. The picture follows the career of a small-time provincial actor in Germany of the late 19205 through his rise to prominence as a star and head of the Nazi State Theatre in the years immediately preceding the Second World War. The title comes from the role of Mephistopheles. the devit's servant sent to tempt the title character in the drama Faust. The actor achieves his greatest success in this role. and as a result becomes a favorite ofa powerful Nazi getter ah In reality. the actor himself is a Faust-like character, and the gen- eral the Mephisto whose temphr tions overwhelm the actor. Brilliant portrayals by actors Klaus Maria Brandauer (as the actor) and Roll Hoppe las the general) alone make this movie a richly satisfying experience. Stun- ning craftsmanship by Hungarian tlim-makers make it a winner in every sense. of the word. -‘ ". 'h' st .' - 'PPPi
