Red Cross homemakers go into the homes of individuals and families to help them in times of illness, convalescence and disability. They also do light housework, prepare meals and give moral support. Above all, they often replace the need for institutional care. Evelyn Hackney, who heads the 76 homemakers in Kitchenerâ€"Waterioo, said there are approximately 165 Kâ€"W residents using this service each month, and of this number, twoâ€"thirds are senior citizens. Annie Marshall looks forward to her visits with Waterloo homemaker Ermal Hedrich. Recalling that time, later, when making a career choice, she decided to become "someone‘" for others in difficult situaâ€" Homemakers are given both theoretical and practical training, covering nutrition, household management, human behaâ€" viour, hygiene and personal care, common illness and first aid. They learn how to spot illness and changes in the patient‘s condition, which they report to approâ€" priate professionals. Homemakers are required to take a running 12 to 13 weeks (one night a week), as well as a 40â€"hour selfâ€"development course through Conestoga College. And they are educated through homemaker Because of their special training and skills, homemakers make it possible for people to stay in their own homes, circumventing the necessity of them staying in an institution, such as a nursing home or hospital. ‘*People are happier staying at home," said homemaker supervisor Evelyn Hackâ€" ney. ‘"It helps keep them independent." Professionals, such as doctors and planâ€" ners for the elderly, said Hackney, believe that patients stay more alert if they remain in their own homes using support services. And staying there, eases the burden of hospital capacity. It costs $6.15 per hour for homemaker service. Many participants pay directly for the help, but there is legislation which provides for financial assistance to those who qualify because of financial difficulty or medical need. ° No one is excluded from help if in need," said Hackney. o â€" Homemakers will help in the home for a few hours a day, a few hours a week, or full time. When choosing them, Hackney looks for someone with understanding, an interest in people and good health.
