And although Kâ€"W Civitans were stopped an ohâ€"soâ€"short step from the top at the Canadian Junior Ladies Softball tournament Sunday, they on the field and off fully lived up to the name emblazoned on their jerseys. Acting as tremendous hosts for the annual national championships at Woodside Park, Civitans wrote all but the final chapter Sunday when they came from off the pace to make it to the finals of the fiveâ€"day event only to lose 1â€"0 for the second time in two days to deserving champiqn Alberta before over 2,000 Civitans wear the name proudly Civitans didn‘t take the easy route, either in the tourney or before it. A highlyâ€"publicized upheaval two weeks prior to the event resulted in the resignation of longâ€"time coach Pete Mcllwraith and all involved wondered how the tearnt would react as host team in the natiohals. But from coach Martin Donat on down, the Civitans entered the tourney with a positive, optimistic outlook and it showed as they played their way through preliminary action and two games Sunday morning to advance against Alberta, where the storybook finish was cut short by a fourthâ€"inning triple and Top left: Civitan‘s 19â€"yearâ€"old pitcher Cathy Tawse was named top pitcher in last week‘s Canadian junior girls softball championships. The tournament overâ€"all, run by the hardâ€" working Kâ€"w Civitan club under the sponâ€" sorship of Labatt‘s who provided tourney ending awards, was a huge success, especialâ€" ly on the final two days when brilliantlyâ€"sunny skies graced the park. _ And to have the host club exhibit its sponsors‘ ideals on the field was just icing on the cake ...
