Part of the challenge and learning experience for Eaton will be the fact that "at any given time there could be four languages spoken." The Canadian group is comprised of both English and Frenchâ€"speaking teens, while the Sri Lankans will speak either Singhalese or Tamil. He ailso looks forward to learning more about Buddhism, one of Sri Lanka‘s main religions. "I‘s a n-&iun I have always liked." . Eaton is glad the program takes him to Sri Lanka. ‘"The (Canada World Youth) program has been running in Sri Lanka for eight years. Of all the programs, it‘s one of the best. All the problems have been worked out of it." Eaton left Waterloo last Thursday en route to Bridgetown, Nova Scotia, where he will take part in a twoâ€"week training camp "before we meet our Sri Lankan friends." +0 "It‘s not an aid program," he stressed. In midâ€"October, the group of 44 will depart for Sri Lanka, where they will also live with famities and work in the community. # Eaton said he was Yoverjoyed when I f@und out I was selected." A selfâ€"professed "people person," Eaton said he is looking forward to meeting new people and tackling fresh challenges. "It‘s a test for me in relating to people, doing scary things. A test for me and my abilities. To see how well I can do, how involved I can get. I like that challenge." The exchange with Sri Lanka means that 22 teens from that Asian country will work in groups with the 22 Canadians, with the first leg of the program taking place in Nova Seotia. There the young people will live with Maritime families and get actively involved in community projects. ‘"We will present cultural pmgi‘ain.{ do comâ€" munity projects like reâ€"doing community halls ... work that doesn‘t otherwise get done," Eaton said. According to Eaton, the purpose of the program is "to help worldwide development and (bring about) a â€" betterâ€" understanding of different peoples." As well, he explained, it will give him "a better understanding of Canada and its needs." And for the next seven months, the 17 year old Watertoo collegiate institute student will be living a golden opportunity. He is one of 22 youngy Canadians participating in an exchange program with Sri Lankan teenagers through the Canada World Youth Program Canada World Youth, a non prnifil organization, has been sponsoring exchange programs between Canada and 23 participatingy countries for 11 years,. A total of 6,000 young people from around the world have taken part Learning about people both here in Canada and abroad is Chris Eaton‘s idea of living life tw its fullest ja8t gue ! In addition to extraâ€"curricular activities such as student counâ€" cil and sports at Waterloo collegiate, work with a youth group at his church, and a partâ€"time job at Canadian Tire, the "people person‘ also looks forward to getting more involved in the commuâ€" nity. ~Something with the handicapped. perhaps working with the blind."" he said. In any event, Eaton reiterated, "it will give me a much better understanding of people here in Canada." That, he added,. "will help me with local community work" once he returns to Wa terioo. Canada World Youth encourages its partici pants to expand their involvement in their own communities once they complete the program. ~I feel this urgency. For me it‘s the first step in getting involved in bigger things." The bigger things include h}i\'ing a chance to see if developmental work outside Canada is the career he wants to pursue. "I‘m quite confident that 1 am ready," Eaton said he told the officials. Chris Eaton is participating in a sevenâ€" month exchange program with teenagers from Sri Lanka. Eaton, at 17, is the youngest Canadian participant in the Sri Lanka exchange. During the sixâ€"month long selection period, which began last November (more than 500 young Canadians applied, according to Eaton), administrators asked him if he felt he was ready to participate in such a demanding program. The country, which used to be a British colony . has about 14 million people, Eaton explained, and ‘has one of the highest literacy rates in Asia."
