But Those facetious fears were of course quickly allaved by the performance of West and Davis, the latter who was named recipient of the Esso Cup as top male swimmer at the meet with three gold, a silver and bronze to say nothing of two Canadian records in the five events he contested. And so all three left Tuesdas morning for Orlando, where they will train until July 26 before leaving for Ecuador and a crack at the world‘s best. The ROW kingpins made for an excellent study in contrast in Toronto as each applied himself in separate ways to the task of producing the needed results "1 certainly hope we have a couple qualify," mused Barry tongueâ€"inâ€"cheek last week when assessing his swimmers chances. "I‘d hate to be going to Ecuador (as men‘s assistant national coach) alone. The message of course was clear. Pres tuge is mee, but there is no substitute for the uecket to Ecuador, the 1982 gateway to the world, and the only ones earning the berth would be those winning events or meeting qualifyving standards They are the apple of our natonal swimming eye these days. The meet, bringing together the top swimmers in the country all aiming for a berth on the Canadian nfiational team that will compete in the world championships later this month in Guayaguil. Ecuador, was labelled by Barry last week as the most important his five competitors had ever swam in to this point With barely enough time to savor their accomplishments, the hot pepper and cool cucumber of the Region of Waterioo swim club were winging their way to Orlando Fla Tuesday with ROW‘s top banana CHYM‘rs tackle the best " _ NOW WE ARE SELLING COLD CUtTs, FANCY MEATS & DUTCH CHEESES European Sandwich Shop 42 King St. North 4.29 lb. 4.34 lb. 4.98 ib . 4.39 lb. 3.99 Ib. 4.25 Ib. 4.79 tb. 1.25 Ib. There shoulid be mention also of ROW‘s other three competitors, Todd Gray. Kevin Auger and A) Swanston, the latter pair who narrowly missed standard times. and the efforts they put forth as admitted underâ€" dogs. But now, as expected, the spotlight is on their teammates, West and Davis, who have gained entrance to the pinnacle of swim ° competition, the world championships. West too, chalked up a bonus of no mean dimensions when he came from second in the preliminaries to edge out Cam Henning in the 200 backstroke final Friday. The 100â€"back favorite, West has been working diligently to increase his stamina for the longer event and duplicated his winter national finish by adding the 100 backstroke crown Saturday, though neither on this occasion represented Canadian records. For Mike West and Vic Davis. there simply is no other Wway. A foil to the rfp'irilâ€"slirred Davis. West is no less the competitor, but prefers to gear up for his events in an introspective manner, belving his equal will to succeed. with his specialty being the breaststroke, the other accomplishments Davis achieved, including the copping of the Esso Cup, were of course bonuses of the nicest kind at the urging of Barry to "get animal," Davis shaved down, cracked the Canadian barrmier in the final that night, and was off to the races in more events than one. Spurred by his success, the superâ€"charged. well toned athlete went on to a silver in the 400 IM, gold in the 200 IM, gold and Canadian record in the 200 breast and third in the 200 f11 GARAGE SA Parkdale Plaza Waterion _ 8848540 THURS FRI â€"â€"ard a»\&‘S PARKDALE PRO HARDWARE PARKDALE PRO HARDWARE 1 ©ASH A ) ARRY wnd aAct 5 6 MAC RICK CAMPBELL SAT
