~ <Â¥ s Race official Peter Telford seemed to enjoy his task of directing runners during the early stages of the Mayâ€"Tenâ€"Kay race Sunday at University and Lincoln. PAGE 24 â€" WATERLOO CHRONICLE, WEDNESDAY, MAY 12, 1982 Kâ€"W Record reporters Anne McNeilly and April Lindgren trained seven weeks to prepare for the race, and although they didn‘t finish among the leaders, they displayed the true spirit of the event, fun and participation, with flying colors. Other winners included Mona McLaughlin (43:58) in preâ€"teen, Gisele Miller (40:31) in 13â€"17, Volda Manninen (42:00) in 30â€"34, Susan McDaniel (44: 13) in 35â€"39, Margaret Squires (45: 12) in 40â€"49 and Eve Menich (48: 48) in over 50 classes. Lisa Campfeos of Kitchener, a 19â€"yearâ€"old student at University of Waterloo, was the overâ€"all winner with a time of 38: 58. She was followed by Jenny McPhail of Toronto in 39;50 and Murie! Praught of Kitchener in 40: 18. & _ **Last year the course was laid out around the residential area near the Y to prevent traffic problems and so on," explained Mayâ€"Tenâ€"Kay organizer Gabrielle Moule. "That was fine for the traffic and the police, but as you know those roads are pretty hilly, especially for the novice runners and the last mile or two they were commenting how difficult it was. ‘"This year the runners were satisfied with the new route, we eliminated a lot of the hills and that brought favorable reaction. It was no one‘s imagination. There was good reason for the fact this year‘s Shopper‘s Drug Mart Mayâ€"Tenâ€"Kay road race produced more smiling faces at the finish line than the inaugural a year ago. The race, sponsored by the Kâ€"W Y Women‘s rumfing club, was significantly changed routeâ€"wise this year to eliminate some of the more ru_gged terrain and that suited the close to 90 competitors just fine. _Perfect day for Tenâ€"Kay Official race starter Linda Staudt of UW, herself a worldâ€"class marathon runner, waits to signal the start as race organizer Gabrille Moule gives entrants final countâ€" down instructions.
