Women & the economic crisis The economic crisis and what it means to women is the topic of a lecture by Marjorie Cohen of the economic department of York University, to be given Monday, March 8 at 8: 15 p.m. in the Aduit Recreation Centre at the corner of King and Allen Sts., Waterloo. The lecture is part of the Kâ€"W International Women‘s Day (IWD) celebration and is coâ€" sponsored by the Kâ€"W Status of Women Group and the Kâ€"W IWD Comâ€" mittee. The regular meeting of the Kâ€"W Status of Women Group will precede the lecâ€" ture, beginning at 7: 30 BUS STRIKE "I don‘t know how long it was since our last meeting, but it seemed like an eterâ€" nity,"‘ said Brian Strain manager of Charterways‘, Kitchâ€" ener operation. After severa)l hours of taiking the company made its final offer to the drivers. An offer which union â€" officials are advising their membership to reject. by Ray Martin It has taken three weeks, but this past Monday 53 striking bus drivers met with Charâ€" terways management and the mediator to try and hammer out a new agreement in London. ‘"‘We are offering the By Karla Wheeler Last Saturday, Feb. 27, 1982 was a noteworthy day in Waterloo because lifeâ€"long resident Conrad (Connie â€" proâ€" nounced ‘"Cunnie") Allendorf celebrated his 100th birthday. While he looked physically frail, it was clear that Connie‘s mental agility has prospered during a century of life. He wasn‘t missing a thing. His eyes were bright with curiosity as they followed the commotion of people and cars outside and the trail of wellâ€"wishers inside the house who added their heartfelt birthday sentiments to the dozens Connie had already received. _ *"*Keeping your mouth shut," the feisty man quipped. The frailâ€"looking centenarian sat in his favorite living room chair in the house at 52 Willow St, where he and wife Lucinda have lived since they married 59 years ago. Connie recognized everyone, opened each card himself, and read every word without difficulty (except maybe the occasional very fine line of print). This birthday boy was enjoying every minute, especially the chance to demonâ€" strate his quick wit to the Chronicle reporter who fired away questions. ‘*How does it feel to reach 100 years," I continued, undaunted by his abruptness. With this, Connie Allendorf paused for perhaps two seconds, then heid out his ‘"What‘s your secret to living a long healthy life," I asked, expecting to hear pearly words of wisdom. A century of living hasn‘t dampened Conrad Allendort‘s quick wit, our Chronâ€" icle interviewer learned Saturday. Local man celebrates 100th birthday Drivers urged to reject pact In the first year of the contract, if it were accepted, the charter rate given the drivers would rise from $4.55 to $5 an hour and jump again in year two to $5.50. If the drivers were to accept the offer their school bus rate would increase from $18.50 to $19.85 per day in the first year of the conâ€" tract, retroactive to Sept. 1. In the second year the school bus rate would rise to $21.80. drivers a 21 per cent increase over the next two years. It‘s a pretty healthy increase these days," Strain said. The uon will be presenting the buslines final offer to the drivers Wednesday night and should it be rejected the company may ask the labor board to intervene and yet another vote would be held, according to Strain. ‘‘"After that who knows what the next step would be," he said. Pau) Middleton, repâ€" resentative for the London and District Service Workers Union at Monday‘s London meeting and local chairman Don Fisher were both unavailable for comment Tuesday. In the meantime, both boards of educaâ€" tion in Waterloo Region are forced to sit on the sidelines as the two sides wrangle. As the public school board transportation Lucinda and Connie, who married on Christmas Day in 1922, had no children, but kept active with their hobbies, social life and careers (Lucinda fondly recalled the ‘"wonderful students‘"‘ she encounâ€" tered as a teacher at Kitchenerâ€"Waterloo collegiate for 35 years). ‘‘Happy memories," secret, she said. And heredity plays an important role in his long healthy life, she added. Several of his siblings lived well into their nineties, and Connie has a 97â€"yearâ€"oid sister living in Victoria, B.C. It‘s this avid interest in horticulture which has helped keep him young, she said, along with "his jolliness ... no, it‘s not jolliness ... it‘s that sense of humor of his." ‘His life has been gardening," Lucinda said, explaining that he was active for many years in the Waterloo Horticultural Society and has won numerous gardening awards. Up until last year, she noted, her husband was still able to get outside and putter in his garden. Connie was one of 13 Allendorf children born next door at 54â€"56 Willow St., Lucinda recounted. He worked for McBrine‘s Baggage Co. in Kitchener for over 40 years and is a lifeâ€"long member of St. John‘s Evangelical Lutheran Church. He is the oldest living member of that 145â€"yearâ€"old congregation. His spry 92â€"yearâ€"old wife immediately came to my rescue. "Isn‘t that just like Connie. Always a quick answer," she chuckled, then proceeded to piece toâ€" tg,ether some information about her husâ€" and. left hand, rubbed his fingers together, and said: *""Same fingers. Yep, they still feel the same." ‘"‘I just hope they can wrap this thing up as soon as possible," Clifâ€" ford said. No action is planned by the sepaâ€" rate board until the outcome of the driver‘s vote is known. At the separate school board parents are still driving their children to school. Acâ€" cording to director of education Frank Clifâ€" ford, a joint meeting between Charterways, the board and a group of outraged parents from the Maryhill area was cancelled when it was announced the drivers and the comâ€" pany were meeting Monday. *‘We‘ve had a few breakdowns, but we haven‘t had to pull a bus off the road," he said. officer, Bob Schlosser said the board has enâ€" countered no real probâ€" lems yet. He was enjoying, even relishing, every moment of excitement and attenâ€" tion during his 100th birthday. ‘"Lu, look, here comes Mrs. Schaefer." ° But then someone walked through the front door. "If I didn‘t like Waterloo 1 wouldn‘t be sticking around so damn long," he reâ€" plied. ‘"I hope I don‘t have too many more of these birthdays," he added. "I‘m gettin‘ to old for all this." Sparkling eyes peered up over eyegiass rims. "Everybody comes up from Kitchener and tells us how to run Waterioo. Damn little they know," he stated. And the Chronicle reporter asked the obvious question. "Do you like living in Waterloo?" Connie verbally poohâ€"poohed such a thing, but acknowledged its importance with a loveâ€"look sent in Lucinda‘s direcâ€" tion. From the next room, someone menâ€" tioned politicians, and Connie‘s defences But another important factor is one that Lucinda was too modest to mention. ‘"It‘s the tender, loving care he‘s gotten from Aunt Lu ... and her emphasis on good nutrition," commented Lucinda‘s niece, Lucile Harris of Waterloo. Lucile and her sister Elaine Dankwardt of Kitchener were on hand Saturday to organize the flow of traffic and prepare the birthday dinner. Lucinda coyly smiled at the compliâ€" ment and looked down at her life‘s partner. ‘"‘Tender, loving care, Connie. What do you think?"
