Guderian ironi cally was runnerâ€"up at the Water loo County meet to fellow Cam bridge clubmate Dave Hendry of Forest Heights, then came fourth at CWOSSA. Fine finishes, but certainly not results that would make him stand out heading into the provincialâ€"wide OFSAA field against 200 or so of the best in On tario. _ Those modest dividends were enough to spur Guderian on to a competitive interest in the sport last year when he entered in school races and competitions such as the annual Heritage Loppet. There‘s been no turning back this year. he‘s now a member of the Cambridge Crossâ€"Country Ski Club under coach Dasha Cejar, and Guderian competes regularly on the Southâ€" ern Ontario Division (SOD) cirâ€" cuit. "I think it was about six years ago I actually started skiing, my parents got me some (skis) for Christmas," said Guderian at BCI Monday. "About two years ago I started skiing a fair bit, Bechtel Park is right behind our house, and I guess what got me interested was here I was just a little guy passing all the others." You see, it was just a week ago Monday that young Doug Guâ€" derian, a 17â€"yearâ€"old grade 12 student at Bluevale collegiate, litâ€" erally came out of the pack in Sudbury to win the gold medal for finishing first at the Ontario Federâ€" ation of Schools Athletic Associaâ€" tion 10K crossâ€"country ski champiâ€" onships. No shabby feat, for a youngster who didn‘t even take up the sports seriously until a year ago. The Guderians, over on 107 Bridge St., have a somewhat larger facility at the foot of their backâ€" yardâ€" it‘s called Bechtel Park and the significance of that has skyrocketed in the past nine days. By Rick Campbell Chronicle Sports Editor It is a reasonable assumption that those with backyard pools are prime candidates to breed good swimmers. WLU president Dr. Neale Tayler (left) accepts a cheque for $500 from Bob Hayward, area manager for Nestle (Canada) Ltd. awarded on behalf of WLU defensive back Barry Quarrell in recognition of his being named to the 1981 CIAU allâ€"Canadian Football team. it was the second successive award for Barry and brings the total Nestle has presented to WLU since 1975 to $5,500. (WLU Publications photo). QUIK MONEY It looked good all right. Good as gold. ‘"The OFSAA course was really icy that day, that meant a lot of doubleâ€"poling (paralle! arm move ment), which helped me. The meet was run really well, I had just finished and put my sweats on and when I went inside our times were already posted. Some of the comâ€" petitors hadn‘t finished yet, but I could tell my time looked good, compared to others I had raced beâ€" fore." Guderian, who also runs track and crossâ€"country in addition to canoeing in the summer to strengthen his arms, agreed that early preparation is an integral part of his modus operandi. ‘‘That‘s right, I don‘t like to be rushed before a race. Take at OFSAA. things like the waxing of your skis was most important, if you don‘t do a good job of waxing it could really affect your perfor mance. I also like to get psycholo gically prepared for a race, I like to sit around with the other skiers, getting my skis ready and getting the course set in my mind." The course at Sudbury. said the gold medal winner, was to his ad vantage physical fitness," commented Johnstone. ‘‘The day of the race he was anxious to get to the courseâ€" about four hours before the race began. He‘s that intense." Doug Guderian
