Unlike many of tho KDSI. clubs whose origins stem from vthnic circles, Athletics will be promoted as "Waterloors own" in an attempt to gain the support of the cummu nity at large rather than only a small ethnic group. It has not likely been the major topic of discussion at your average neighborhood cocktail party. - At the Kitchener and District Soccer League's annual general meeting in early December, a franchise headed by Abbott and Vanderveen was granted admission to the KDSL Second Division for the upcoming season -- and as a result. Waterloo Athletics were born ond the city now has "its own" senior soccer club. “We want to mow the club up (in RDSI. competition) ah Cast as we can." explained Abbott. a formvr Waterloo Minor Sow" volunteer who will wrvr as prvsidept of Athletics tive porwn executive. "We want to be known as a Waterloo team in its first year in tho second division of the KI)SL.nol just another second divisor: club." Athletic seniors' fill local void The name Athletics should ring a bell m most local soccer circles since that was the name of the under-21 junior club founded by Vanderveen five years ago. Vanderveen. who resigned from his manager"s post with Athletics after year three and last year helped turn around the lortunes of the KDSL‘s Kitchener City club. will stand as Athletics manager on the executive Secre tary will be former Waterloo minor volutr leer Trudy Derry while two of Vander veen's former players will help with various organizational aspects But nevertheless. there are those people who have wondered over the years why Waterloo has remained one of the only, if not the only city of its size in Southern Ontario void of a senior soccer entry. "We've talked about the idea (of a senior club) many times in the past," said Vanderveenc'what I did was contact about a halfdoten players beforehand to see what they thought. and they all said let's go do it. When you've got a nucleus like that, you ran build around It." Speaking of nuclei. Athletics have had some so players working out at Waterloo Family Y alnce early January. many who formerly played the under-2| Athletic A's. Some more will be returning from Europe to join ranks and the club would be more Bob Vanderveen By Rick Campbell Chronicle Sports Editor Notes: Waterloo Athletics will soon be launching an extensive season-ticket cam- paign. Anyone wishing information can call Bob Vanderveen at “I.“ or Bruce Abbott at 885-6410 ”Athletics are presently train, ing under long-lime area coach F.mit Booklet and Vanderveen hopes to get him " come aboard as coach pr, Over 50% of the players vying for positions at the present time played [or Athletic A's juniors. including Abbott's son Tom, a standout with University of Waterloo Warriors. Further bolstering the development sys- tern for Athletics is the fact the KDSL has established a lo-team under-18 league in which Waterloo will have an entry that will automatically become a farm team for Athletic seniors. By design, Vanderveen and Abbott indi- cated the executive level of Athletics' organization will remain small, but both pledge fierce devotion to submitting their utmost to make a go of senior soccer in War terloo. (H course the broadest base to build an is the Watvrloo Minor Soccer system, and Vanderveen anticipates an outstanding relationship with that sector. Free passes will be distributed to all minor sou-or coaches and players.. “You have to give the ethnic groups credit tor what they've done for soccer here (in KW). but they still won't get the general public to come out In watch them," said Vandcrveen, -That's what we're after. wc want our club to be Waterloo's club. we're playing in Canada and want a Canadian 1.0.“ _ Athletics will be one of ti teams in the KDSL second division as they are actually taking the place of Zagreb, a former first-division powerhouse annihilated by player defections, which has chosen to fold rather than accept relegation to the second division based on last year's performance. "We're really hoping to make a go of this thing, and we're happy to be a part of the KDSL," said Vanderveen. "In the past few years they've got a lot of bad publicity. but their president (John Fisher) won" stand for any of that (violence) anymore. lle's cleaned up all the bad stuff. and the calibre has improved tremendously - just look at olyhoe, they won the Ontario Cup last year and that's a lot of tough competi ttom" A further bonus aiding Athletics is the arrangement that will sm- them play home games on weekends at Seagram Stadium than receptive to allowing anyone a tryout on Sundays at the Y from 46:30 pm.
