PAGE " - WATERLOO CHRONICLE. WEDNESDAY, pgcggggaoAinl By Rick Clmpboll Chronicle Sport. Em Seems hard to believe but a hat trick helped Waterloo Siskin goalie Jeff Nickel win the Midwestern South most valuable player award in Saturday's opening game of the Miracle Food Mart Junior B hack ey tournament at Kitchener Aud. Not the kind of hat trick that forwards dream of, the three- goals-in-one-game variety, but a slightly different type. With Nickel slated to share the goaltending workload in the tour- ney with Kitehener's Brad Murray and Cambridge's Bob Jones, Mid- western South (MS) coach Jack Egers of Kitchener felt the fairest way to decide his starting goal- tender would be to drew numbers out of the hat. Luck of the draw or not, the decision proved a wise one as Nickel in his unique bouncy fashion stoned the Golden Horseshoe ali- stars 6-1 to get MS off to a fine start in the two-division eight-team event. As things turned out, Nickel won the starting assignment, Jones the second game and Murray the third. Unfortunately for MS, they ran into hot goaltending themselves in game two Sunday and lost 7-3 with Jones tending net, but rebounded for a S-4 win over Metro East Monday to earn a spot in the bronze medal game yesterday. The Midwestern North team comprised mainly of Stratford Cul- litons and coached by Jack Nairn, swarmed over Western all-stars 92 Monday to win their division and the right to play for the gold medal against Central West in last night's finale. MS faced Metro Central in the bronze game, but.results were not known at press deadline. "I was surpriseingly very ner- vous going into the game (Satur- day)," said Nickel Monday after- noon after he watched Murray come up with a fine effort to stop Metro East. "I'm not usually nervous, but this game was dif- ferent, you Just don't know what's out there. 'H found they were harder shooters than I normally face and the pace was faster. They simply outran us in the first period." Although no official shots on goal were kept, Golden Horseshoe had the edge in the dangerous shot department. but Nickel held his mates in until the second period when they popped home five goals thrdo'wntoilrn wo'i7iert's ii EARLY WNW SESSION â€an“ m An eight-week course deolmg with oil aspects of pregnancy. "All I was thinking was lust try to stop everything that came at me," said the IFyearoid WLU stu- lagers singled out bot goaltending his club faced in game two as the only drawback to I fine over-all effort by Ns charges. "Our first game I thought we played really well as a team, that first game was our best game," he said. "The second game we had a bad first period, it was our inability to score that did us in, and today again I thought we got the win thanks to our goaltending. "Our strongest point? Well, I think our goaltending has been superb, Nick got us up in game one, and Murray out there today held us in too." The agile Nickel credits his familiarity with Egers during last season together with Siskins as a big bonus in his selection. “I was really surprised when they phoned me to tell me 1 was picked. there's a lot of good goalies around. But with Jack my coach last year, he knew how 1 played, he gives you a lot of confidence. We had a lot of shooting drills in our (four) practices together, 1 found that very beneficial." So did Siskin shooters on the MS squad as all but left winger Jeff Job found the range in preliminary play. Pat Hinnegan scored in Saturday's win and got the eventu- al game winner Monday, while Tim Fedy scored on a Shorthanded breakaway Monday and Roger Carlaw got credit for a thirxeperiod marker Monday that bounced off an opponent‘s leg. During the three games, the scoring and offensive power on all lines was evenly-dis- tributed as Egers stuck mainly to team troikas. "We didn't change anything," Egers said of the three games, "lust stuck with the same game plan we worked on in our four practices. That's a fine bunch of guys we iced out there, I think any coach would be glad to have them on his club."
