Dr. J. B. (John) Theberge, a biologist who teaches ecology and resource management in the faculty of environmental studies, has spent his last 10 summers in the north, studying various aspects of its ecology. _ _ _ The t}aéiing of wolves and caribou was accomplished by a technique known as "teleâ€" From a helicopter, target animals were tracked and shot with trnnqnélzers. Each animal was fitted with a radio collar while asleep. An antenna on the helicopter enabled Theberge and David Gauthier to follow the radio signal emitted from the collar. "Wolves can travel 100 miles in a single night, so tracking them on foot is impractical," Theberge said. Theberge and Gauthier received $200,000 from the governments of Canada and the Yukon to study the effects of predation â€" by wolf, grizzly bear and man â€" on the caribou. As it is, caribou are not very productive; they mature late, give birth to only one calf at a time, and are plaqued by a high calf mortality rate. Man‘s presence just tips the scales against caribou survival, according to Theberge. Roads currently being built to improve access to gold claims, mines and oil explorations provide improved access for hunters and very often result in declining numbers of animals. _ _ The -_Ea;;fiéhfi. along with Foothills Gas Pipelines Ltd. Entitled "Environmentally Significant Areas," the report was written by Drs. Theberge, Nelson, and Terry Fenge, with the help of 10 graduate planners and geographers. . _ _ Their mandate was to identify a system of environmentally significant areas that should be converted into national parks or conservation "Bit by bit we‘re losing our wilderness heritage,‘" Theberge explained. ‘"The last act of the Carter administration was to declare 25 per cent of Alaskan lands national interest lands. I think Canada should do the same."‘ Because of proposed "megaâ€"projects‘" in minâ€" ing and petroleum explorations, he feels Canada should move quickly to prevent the Yukon‘s environmental demise. _ The criteria for a parcel of land being declared as environmentally significant include the wildâ€" life, scenery, land formations and endangered species. . _ Although the study claims about 25 per cent of the Yukon as environmentally significant, Theâ€" berge said that in most cases these areas are not earmarked for exploration. "‘_‘fiaâ€"t_i;é,-étivirofimemal, petroleum and mining interests must coâ€"operate to design a planned future for the north that caters to all interests," he said. PERFECT NOW.
