St. Mary‘s junior girls‘ basketball team, coached by Pat Binnersley (centre background), have regular season game in the past two years. , as as St. Mary‘s junior powerhouse St. Mary‘s high school defeated Blueâ€" vale junior Knights vance to the Waterioo County â€" finails Thursâ€" day. Corrie Hummel! had 18 points for the winners while Kim Poag had 11 for Knights. By Rick Campbell Chronicle Sports Editor Now that‘s some encore The prey was vulnerâ€" able, the hunter stalked, and the kill was quick. On the surface, it was ‘‘just‘‘ another junior girls basketball game in Kâ€"W last Tuesâ€" day when St. Mary‘s d rubbed Forest Heights, but for the St. Mary‘s cagers of coach Pat Binnersley, it was much more than that. The victory, albeit anticipated, gave St. Mary‘s its second sucâ€" cessive undefeated regular season in Waâ€" terloo County action, certainly a commendâ€" able feat and a continuâ€" ation of the rich tradiâ€" tion of success at the Kâ€"W separate school. ‘We‘ve been in the semis or finals every year in our history, and by that I mean my history," said Binnersâ€" ley, whose troops chalked up their second straight 120 regular season and were preâ€" paring to meet Blueâ€" vale Knights Tuesday in semiâ€"final action after breezing through weekend quarterâ€"final play. ‘"We‘re known as a strong field hockey school, but basketball at our school has a heavy tradition..." St. Mary‘s had their unbeaten skein interâ€" rupted twice last year by the upstart KCI Raiders in postâ€"season action. St. Mary‘s easiâ€" ly won their semiâ€"final set, then were extendâ€" ed to three games beâ€" fore ousting KCI in the Waterioo County finals. Raiders got their reâ€" venge by knocking off St. Mary‘s in CWOSSA play to pull off one of the upsets of the high school sports season. But as far as regular season play is conâ€" cerned St. Mary‘s has picked up right where they left off in 1980 and with a strong nucleus of seven returnees, duâ€" plicated last year‘s unblemished record. ‘‘They (players) have really good basâ€" ketball sense," said Binnersley, who has coached the St. Mary‘s juniors for the past seven years after one year of senior. ‘"‘They‘ll go to the basket every time... but they‘re disâ€" ciplined. All the tourâ€" naments we‘ve been in this year, the other coaches have come up and said ‘that‘s a really disciplined team you‘ve got there‘." Binnersley credits the skill development her players receive at the elementary level for giving them an edge when they adâ€" vance to the secondary school scene. "They‘re wellâ€"versed in the fundamentals, all we have to do is teach them the game plays," she said moâ€" destly. ‘"‘They‘re pretty loose, relaxed kids, sure they get a bit jittery before games but we have warmâ€"ups set up to help out... they‘re very mature kids for this level." "And I can‘t lie to my kids, they know what presâ€" sure‘s there, but they don‘t panic. We‘ve been in tournament games where we‘ve had to come from beâ€" hind and we‘ve handled it well." A major reason for that, according to first year player Andrea Jesso, is that team unity is most prevaâ€" lent. "I came from a team last year where everyâ€" one used to fight all the time, but I was glad to find out it isn‘t like‘that here this year. Even if someone makes misâ€" takes, not everyone is going to have a bad game at the same time and everyone just helps each other out. We‘re all friendly with each other." Good thing too, beâ€" cause with a record like theirs, the junior girls of St. Mary‘s aren‘t likely to make many friends â€" at least on the court. And that suits them just fine.
