WCI quarterback Marco Trecroce gets some advice from head coach Darv Easton during a secondâ€"half timeâ€"out last week against KCI, while in top photo WCI‘s Rob Bentham was an unwelcome guest in the KCI backfield as he brings down the balicarrier for a lose. Explosive half carries Vikings By Rick Campbell Chronicle Sports Editor Almost every successful football team has enormous talent in what are referred to as the ‘"key‘‘ positions. S That usually means quarterback, halfback, receiver, linebacker, the areas of the game with the greatest concentration of activity â€" and pressure. And it looks like that is where Waterloo Vikings senior football club is going to have to ride the wave if they hope to succeed against their Waterloo County foes. Not endowed with a great deal of depth or experience, Vikings nonetheless got a gritty effort from the trenchmen along the lines, youthful as they may be, and fused with the experience and poise of veterans at the "key" posts, parlayed big firstâ€"half plays to a 21â€"10 win over KCJI Raiders Friday in the opening game of the 1981 season for both clubs. Ironically, the result was not as close as the score might indicate, despite the pluckiness of the equally inexperienced KCI bunch, but could have been much closer had the Raiders played the entire ball game like they did the second half. . What Vikings did showcase in the first half proved to be enough to grab the two points, and instill hope in WCI supporters anxious to see the team succeed. If one individual could do that singularly, it would appear to be quarterback Marco Treâ€" croce, a grade 13 transfer student whose poise and delivery injected momentum into Vikes‘ first half offence. Trecroce, who came to Waterioo this summer with his family from the South Shores region of Montreal, hit on firstâ€"half touchdown pitches to former quarterback Phil Israel on two occasiens and to Chuck Wust, a transfer from Toronto Agincourt, on a 24â€"yard screen. Trecroce‘s second toss to Jsrael, a 60â€"yard bomb with only 10 seconds left in the half, ultimately was the straw to break KCI‘s back. "The competition is good here, it‘s nice to have a game like this to start the season off," WATERLOO CHRONICLE, said the friendly, wellâ€"spoken Trecroce, who began playing structured football at bantam age. ‘"But this is only the beginning, there‘s a lot of good teams we haven‘t seen yet, the guys have been telling me about Cameron, St. Jerome‘s, Eastwood." While he enjoyed a fine first half, Trecroce admitted Vikings‘ (and his) second half was nothing to write home about. Raiders controlled the ball offensively along the ground, and applied more heat on the rangy quarterback making him hurry many passes. That resulted in Vikings‘ offence basically grinding to a halt. "They (Raiders) just outmuscled our defence in the second half," said winning coach Darvy Easton. ‘"And we had trouble offensively too, but remember Marco‘s still new to our system here, he‘s still adjusting. It‘s sure nice to have the luxury though of sending in a play where you want to have the ball thrown 40 yards â€" and it gets thrown 40 yards."‘ Easton‘s indirect praise of his new pivot extended to. the backfield. With veterans Israel, lan MacLean and Wust complementing Treâ€" croce, Vikings have the potential to put the points on the board. "I like mixing up the passing and running game, though I‘d have to say passing is my strong point personally,"‘ said Trecroce. "I‘ve never played with four downs before either, it means there‘s a lot more passing involved. The extra down gives you a chance to gamble on that Tirst pass, even if you miss it you still have two chances left." â€" Notes: Vikings square off against Cameron Friday at the Kitchener school at 3 p.m., site of WCI‘s ouster last year ... Viking coach Darvy Easton said that of 50 plays, it‘s his team‘s goal to throw the ball about 32 times. Easton is extremely high on running back Chuck Wust. "He‘s got really good lateral movement, great ball sense, and he‘s one of those quiet workers who works hard in practice," praised the WCI boss ... Viking soccer star Igor Vrablic convertâ€" ed a@ll three Viking touchdowns ... KCI‘s touchdown by John Hiller came on the last play of the game. WEDNESDAY , SEPTEMBER 30, 1981 â€" PAGE 21
