nl:acllineg - There he stood, straightâ€"faced among the gaggle of uwnhwndssomumm,m.tem-‘uallnmhh threeâ€"toâ€"five year plan. He‘s some kidder, that Clifford Barry. Atthodme&enewly-amimundeouholthe Region of Wateriloo Swim Club was estimating at a press conference in his honor how long it would take to develop ROW into a strong national contender. Threeâ€"toâ€"five years: was the figure tossed around. A slight, it has since been proven, overâ€"estimation. Armed with what one Toronto paper described as a "fairly good small club from Waterfi»" Barry and his 10â€"swimmer ROW contingent took the recent Esso Cup Canadian national longâ€"course championships in Monâ€" treal by storm with outstanding efforts that placed the local club sixth overâ€"all nationally and tops in Ontario pointâ€"wise. How does that compare with ROW‘s performance in the past? Don‘t ask. The first good local news out of Montreal last week came when 16â€"yearâ€"old Mike West, a local youngster plucked from the ranks of the YMCA system, won the 100m backstroke for ROW in Canadian ageâ€"group record time of 57.63 seconds, which was also the fifth fastest time in the world this year. More headlines followed when West‘s teammate Vic Davis captured gold medals in both the 100 and 200m breaststroke events, clocking the fastest time in Canada this year in the 100. In all, ROW‘s team of seven men and three women picked up three golds, two silver, one bronze, a fourth, fifth, two sevenths, an eighth, two consolation firsts, a consdol fourth and a consol fifth. By virtue of their efforts at the nationals, West, Davis and Kevin Aufer were chosen for the national team now touring Heidelberg, West Germany. Alan Swanston was picked for the World Student Games team and Barry was selected to coach the national team for its August tour of Japan. So much for the ol‘ threeâ€"toâ€"five. "I thought we‘d do well," said Barry back at ROW‘s home WLU lp£0| Monday, ‘"but I didn‘t expect we‘d be that successful. We had gained a bit of a reputation at the winter nationals when we surprised some other teams, but still we weren‘t supposed to do as well as we did in Montreal. Especially Michael (West), do you realize he‘s only i6 years olid?" * A year ago at this time, West was winning the 100m back consolation at the nationals in 1: 00.1. Last week he missed the Canadian senior record by 2/10ths of a second, knocking off NCAA 200 back champion Wade Flemons of Vancouver in the meantime. "I‘ve never heard Mike talk so positively before about his chances, he just felt he was going to win it," said Barry of West, who is described by his coach as extremely easy going when it comes to competition. Actually training tips from Barry helped West in Montreal. Many backstrokers, who rely heavily on ceiling markings in gauging their position, got confused by the funnelâ€"shaped ceiling at the Olympic pool, but Barry trained West : weeks ahead of time to adjust. Flemons wasn‘t so lucky, and at one point made contact with his lane rope. o _ "It was really an exciting race," described Barry. "Mike was about a tenth of a second ahead at the turn but Recreation Centre . Mike just kept gaining though and beat him the last 10 more competitive, more confident. He‘s always been an easyâ€"going guy, maybe his insides turn up a lot before a race but he isn‘t the type to show it."* The double victory by Davis was also significant in that tive Guelph native. After huge suocess at the winter nationals, Davis‘ per(omamed due to lack of local competition and a serious r injury, tendonitis in the rotator cuff, that cost him five weeks of training leading up to the longâ€"course championships. Though he did not register personal best times, Davis broke Canadian ageâ€"group records in both events, and in winning the 100 breast defeated Graham Smith. *"‘They (victories) were both pretty good races," said Barry. ‘Victor came back hard in the last length of both of them, it seems he swims his best from Off the pace. But he won‘t be able to do that against the Russians (in Germany), if they get out too far ahead, they‘ll never let him catch them." Barry, full of praise for his youthful charge, says the vlqtonbywmflnhavenwwdcrmxflum it repr Other members of the ROW team, many experiencing their first taste of national competition, included Ayril Peaker, Kim Gellatly, Paul Hess, Dean Boles, David Swanston, Allison Loucas and Alan Swanston. Loucas, Hess, David Swanston and Boles all recorded personal best times, while Alan Swanston was hampered by what doctors fear is a blood disorder contracted while on a recent tour of Cuba. Auger was also hampered by chronic sore knees injured while attending University of Indiana but still responded admirably. West, Davis, Auger and A\ Swanston also broke existing Canadian relay records finishing second in the 4 x 50 and 4 x 100 medley relays to further drive home the fact that the ‘"‘fairly good small club from Waterloo" had indeed arrived on the national scene. ‘‘These performances will have a tremendous effect at our club," said Barry. ‘"It should help us get a few more kids coming in, bring about an influx of young swimâ€" mers. ‘"‘There‘s no turning back now, we have to push on with our program at the national level, it‘s funny we achieved more success than we expected, yet still had the feeling we wanted more ... We have to keep at it." _ _ _ And that‘s what Barry and his assistants plan to do during the summer months, the traditional break in the swim season. While his charges rest up in anticipation of next season, Barry and ROW‘s other coaches will be slinking around pools in the area, looking for more potential Vic Davises and Mike Wests. In addition, they will conduct a free introductory swimming camp in early September for all those interested in learning about competitive swimming. ‘"‘You have to keep looking, checking out, you never know where you‘re going to uncover a future champion,"‘ said Barry. ® o Funny, ROW executives were saying somewhat the same thing when announcing their new coach a mere 11 months ago. ‘"He‘ll be an entirely different person now, he‘ll be ted a return to form of the intenselyâ€"competiâ€"
