Movie makers have long projected the idea that basic training in the armed services.is lots of fun. â€" From Charlie Chaplin to Francis the talking mule, the image of boot camp in the movies has been one that combined juvenile frivolity and momâ€"andâ€"appleâ€"pie. patriotism. _â€"_The latest film of this stripe is called Stripes. | _ _ . It‘s a lightâ€"headed blend of moronic tomâ€" foolery and f@râ€"fetched heroics that neatly meshes with current American social and political attitudes. ) siutenaimnamiinnen es Drafted out of the Animal House and Meatballs class of screen humor, Stripes strays a little left of centre in areas of sex, language and drugs, but marches steadfastly to the right with its flagâ€"waving militarism. In the picture, Bill Murray plays a taxi driver who in one day loses his job, his car and his liveâ€"in girlfriend and decides to end his goingâ€"nowhere existence by joining the army, also persuading his best friend, played by coâ€"scripter Harold Ramis, to sign up with him At the training camp, they find themselves part of a platoon of misfits and weirdoes, right up to the commanding officer who plays with toy soldiers and carries on a peepingâ€" Tom surveillance of the female barracks. The task of instilling in these grumblers and bumblers both the skills and the spirit of soldiering falls to the drill sergeant, porâ€" trayed by Warren Oates in the standard gruffâ€"andâ€"tough mould but with surprisingly moreâ€"thanâ€"usual character appeal. Some slight indebtedness to last year‘s Private Benjamin may be reflected in the presence of female MP.s, played by P.J. Soles and Sean Young, who also double as our heroes‘ girlfriends and prove to be able comradesâ€"inâ€"arms in the climactic battle with Russian soldiers. _ l;‘orâ€" -til'é"r;lvbértvï¬;ï¬. however, women in this movie are depicted simply as sex objects, and Stripes and slayers Bill Murray is arrested by coâ€"star P.J.Soles in a scene from Stripes. By VICTOR STANTON several scenes include female nudity that is purely gratuitous The Disney Studios seem to have fallen upon some "dark" times with their liveâ€"acâ€" tion movies. A couple of years ago, they brought out a picture called The Black Hole. This year‘s Dragonslayer is set in the Dark Ages. Czechâ€"born Canadian Ilvan Reitman has directed the picture with no particular distinction, merely copying â€" even to the repeating of whole scenes â€" what he did in Animal House and Meatballs. At its best, Stripes is amusing on a very simpleâ€"minded level. At its worst, it manipuâ€" lates adolescent audiences into jingoistic enthusiasm for the American Cold War poliâ€" Although drawing on certain historical concepts of what life in Europe was like during the several centuries between the fall of the roman Empire and the Renaissance, Dragonslayer is, in story and characters, pure fantasy. The tale of a sorcerer‘s apprentice who sets out to destroy a virginâ€"devouring dragon is not a particularly exciting nor involving one for either children or adults, despite some wellâ€"achieved realism in settings and special effects. cy The movie is slowâ€"moving and, in the main, humorless with â€"characters who are not only difficult for contemporary â€" audiences to identify with, but who are, for the most part, so blandly written and portrayed that they seldom seem worth caring about. _ Sir Ralph Richardson is the only "name" performer, playing the part of a Merlinâ€"like wizard, but his screen time is relatively brief. Young players Peter MacNicol, as the apprentice, and Caitlin Clarke, as a village girl brought up as a boy to prevent her from becoming an offering to the dragon, are convincing enough but they lack any strong heroic appeal. _ Most of the special effects, which involve the dragon flying from its lair and attacking its opponents with fiery breath, are saved for the last quarterâ€"hour or so of the movie, and while they‘re good it‘s a case of too little too late Beatilemania comes to Centre in the Square O One of the most reâ€" markable success stories in the history of show business has beâ€" come one of the hottest musicals to play on Broadway. â€" BEATLEâ€" MANIA, the Beatles extravaganza, opens at THE CENTRE IN THE SQUARE on Friday, July 10 at 8 and 11 and continues Saturday, July 11 at 7:00 and 10:00 p.m. and Sunday, July 12 at 700 p.m. B E A T L E M A N I A brings you four beatles deadâ€"ringers, over "C AMBRIDGE EVENING BUFFET" Open the door ... featuring the DHXLACUICIEL EVSRTL SWR EY C PA D C Wf o 2 IP? spareribs with BBQ sauce, and our chef‘s own special selection, garden fresh salad bar, and of course, our including... famous homeâ€"style soup.
