Timely win for Graham Though interest has been high all along, the Labatt‘s International Golf Classic for the CPGA championship received yet another popularity shot in the arm Sunday when Australian David Graham became the first golfer from that continent to ever win the U.S. Open. Graham is one of a host of bigâ€"name players from around the world who have entered this week‘s tournament which offiâ€" cially begins Thursday with first teeâ€"off at 7: 30 a.m. Activities began earlier this week with Lieutenantâ€"Governor John B. Aird presiding over opening ceremonies Monday. A celebriâ€" ty proâ€"am and proâ€"bonus event were held simultaneously yesterday while events today include Camera Day and putting championâ€" ships. The consistent Graham started Sunday‘s final round of the U.S. Open three shots behind leader George Burns, but backâ€"toâ€" back birdies on 14 and 15 allowed Graham to vault into the lead and eventually win the prestigious Open by three shots at the treacherous Merion Club in Ardmore, Penn. ©Graham‘s win is another feather, albeit indirect, in the cap of the Labatt‘s Internaâ€" tional organizers who have gone to great lengths to insure their event spotlights a true international profile with some of the best golfers in the world today. Included in that package are defending champion Arnold Palmer, easily the most recognizable name in the game and without a doubt one of golf history‘s most distinguished players and gentlemen, Raymond Floyd, probably rated the hottest player on the tour and a multipleâ€"event winner this year, Canada‘s top PGA tour player Dan Halldorâ€" son, as well as many other international champions and local stars who should make the entire week an entertaining one for local golf enthusiasts. Weekly passes which include access to the clubhouse at Westmount are available for $50, with daily admission tickets priced at $10, available in advance or at the gate. Because of space limitations at the course, parking will be available at University of Waterloo for $2 with shuttle buses being provided by Kâ€"W Transit. David Graham 4sl 2e Due to a typographiâ€" cal error, it was reâ€" ported in last week‘s Chronicle that Will Field of Lincoln Heights won the 12â€" andâ€"under shot put at the Waterioo County track and field meet with a toss of 1.3 metres. The distance should have read 9.3 metres. Sorry ‘bout that, Will. ox. P& our p:rdon a We can do things for your Honda that strangers can‘t do.
