3,500â€"yearâ€"old game part of museum fare is on display in the University of Waterloo‘s unique museum and archive of games which officially opened in its new quarters last month. The museum is now located on the ground floor of the administrative services building near the Columbia St. entrance to the campus. A 3,500â€"yearâ€"old game from ancient Egypt, a forerunner of the modern game of backgammon, The game in question is officially called *‘*senet" which translates from the Egyptian as the word "passing." Scholars refer to it as The Game of 30 Squares. On loan from the Royal Ontario Museum, it‘s been part of the ROM collection since the early twenties, after having been discovered in an ancient Egyptian tomb. The game consists of a box of tiles, inlaid with lapis lazuli (a semi precious stone), incorporating hieroglyphics. Originally, it was a gambling game. Later, playing it became something of a religious rite since the symbols have to do with life after death. Dr. Elliott Avedon, UW recreâ€" ation professor and founder and curator of the games museum, says there was quite a conâ€" troversy a few years ago as to how the game was to be played. It was finally figured out by a curator in the Boston Museum and his explanaâ€" tion is generally accepted today. Dr. Avedon, who is a sociologist, is coâ€"author of the book, The Study of Games. While the ROM game is the star of the current display in the museum there are a number of other unusual and interesting exhibits on loan from Ontario citizens and from Doon Pioneer Village including a beautifullyâ€"inlaid Victorian gaming table (dating back to about 1870) that features a backgammon board on one side and a T he W a terloo Knights of Columbus Council 5135 held its election of officers at the Knights‘ hall Monâ€" day. The game pieces are kept in drawers under the table and there is even a drawer in which the mother of the family would keep mending materials, so she could sew while her husband and others played. If you thit the jackpot" you don‘t win money â€" you get shiny metallic balls returned which you could cash in for gifts. There are alsp some interesting samples of early bagatelle boards, also related to pinball. Some of these require the player to push the ball with a pool cue. Also on display are games that date back to 13th century Spain. There is a variety of African board games, oriental games, elaborate whist counters (made of tortoise shell, ivory and sterling silver). There are games built on religious themes â€" the players tried to gain entrance to the kingdom of heaven which made the games acceptable to people with strict consciences. Dr. Avedon says he is currently involved in a project to collect games played by various ethnic groups in Ontario, including Indian and Inuit games. . The games museum has been on campus for nine years. This will be its third location. 1t involves a collection of about 1,000 games, not all of which are on display at any given time.
