Chamber response misses key point, But it fails dismally in rejecting outright one of the key compon nts of the consultants' stu y, that is, a revamping of Waterl Square to give more strength to the downtown core. The chamber's report complains about what could be "too much development" in Waterloo Square, but we ask does it T‘ake sense to have a parking lot smack dab in the heart of t e core". And even if the financial costs are high, one has to bear in\ mind that real progress requires investment and that what is l being considered here is the long-range future of Waterloo's downtown. In his letter (May 13). Mr. Silveston, heaped abuse upon Dr. Waldbott and his book, and did injustice to the report by the National Research Council (NRC) of Canada, both of which he claims to have read. At least he admits that he cannot refute the facts in the former book. Regarding the NRC report, he refers to pages " to 83 and page 105. claiming they show fluoridation is "safe." 1 wish every- one in the city would have a copy of that book, so they could verify that one has to be very prejudiced (emotional) to actually believe this. The only other possibility would be deliberate distortion. which l am not assuming. That future requires some bold Blanning, whichcosts, but which can also be handled reasona ly within fiscal limits and in a gradiiated procqss. - A A - - A - Pages 79 to 83 deal exclusively with total fluoride intake from all sources - no mention of safety. The authors do caution that the average daily intake of 3.5 to 5.5 mg/day can be exceeded by certain susceptible groups. Incidentally, the next section (still on the same page) starts: "Fiourides are known to cause chromosome damage and mutations in plant and animal cells and might therefore be considered as possible carcinogens." On page 105. estimates are made for "acceptable" daily fltaoride intake. They range from 0.033 to 0.076 mg/kg, or 2.3 to 5.3 lug/day for a 10 kg human. These figures speak for themselves; however, We feel the chamber has presented a less-than ins ired analysis of what's required to better the downtown ang has demonstrated an unnecessaw aversion to progressive change in its opposition to the aterloo Square proposals. published every Wednesday by Fairway Press. a divmon of Kitchener-Waterloo Record Ltd . owner 225 Fairway Rd S q Kitchener. Further, the authors "must ... conclude that some persons with renal insufficiency have only one-quarter the fluoride tolerance reported in the above tabulation." One quarter of 5.3 mg is 1.325 mg, which is even exceeded by the lower estimate of daily intake! Fluoridation defies common sense. Mr. Silveston - stick with endorsements. Herbert Riedel UW Residence Does Mr. Silveston condemn all people with kidney (renal) diseases to carrying their water, as he has (”he with the allergy sufferers? Needless to say, most are not even made aware of the hazard. Comes to defense of Dr. Waldbott When I say that Robert Hudgins is a wit. 1 am only half right. His little story might amuse others on his intellectual level. but to those of us who take the health of children as a God-given gift, not to be tampered with, it is in bad taste. Dr. George L. Waldbott is one of the first allergy specialists in the United States. He is the worWs leading medical expert on the clinical aspects of chronic tNoride toxicity, as well as a widely consul“ Publisher: Paul Winkle! Manager Biti Kargrs Editor: Phil Minx established 1854 Waterloo authority on the health effects of environ- mental contaminants. His professional affiliations and honours received are far too numerous to mention. Dr. Waldbott has studied cases of fluorosis at many locations in the United States, as well as in Canada. Switzerland, Italy, Germany, Sweden, Belgium and Spain. He has treated more than 500 cases of nuoride toxicity and practices medicine in Warren, Michigan. These facts come from his book "F'luori- dation: The Great Dilemma," which Hudgins claims to have read in a hurry, thereby missing the true meaning of this informative work. I am not condemning Hudgins, because he is just one of many picture-book readers who don't have the time to read anything. Dr. Waldbott would probably consider his letter unworthy of an answer. but those of us who know this great man's potential take exception to examples of ig- norance. The truth is the firemen should get off their high horse. Looking at the very lat increases they get every year. it will not be many years hence that they will be demanding 350.000. or maybe they are looking to an easy $100,000. so instead of retiring at " they can retire at 45. Firemen criticized This is in answer to the Chronicle staff that firemen may still bargain and that city hall should get pf! their high horse. __ L. Walde Mayor Carroll was right when she said they are leap-frogging. They look at other communities and say childishiy, "they are getting so much so we want it." City hall should set an example to hold down the ever-increasing taxes of working people - who are in the majority - who will never see any increase in wages last year or this year and whose dollar is slipping backwards. Maybe we should all look at these negotiations and all working people nego- tiate the same package that the firemen are demanding. Amen. Referendum not political There seems to be a view in some. quarters that the fluoridation referendum has taken a political form. In fact it is the case that adversaries on the political scene have joined forces on this simple matter of the prevention of ill-health: As one who has supported the referen- dum idea. the goal of public debate has certainly been achieved and it appears to me that the prmtluorutttiort 'coalition' (VOTE NO) is winning the day.
