TL J N WNHILE STOCKS LAST Andre Alleyne of Waterloo is now living on an army base in Valcartier, Quebec, having choâ€" sen the military option as his third project. For his first projâ€" ect, in the small town of Gibsons, B.C., Andre worked in the local museum and then spent three weeks as cook aboard a fishing boat owned by a small family business in Gibsons. Next his Each of these local young people joined a different team of 33 workers, and were sent out to communities from the Atlantic to the Pacific. In each community, the Katimavik participants work in projects useful to the commuâ€" nity. In one town, a pldyground was built. In another community they worked on an environmental cleanâ€"up. In yet another, they built a camp for the physically handicapped. Every three months (three times during the program), each team moves to another project, in a different part of the country, and continues the work started by a preceding team. One of the three projects is in a Frenchâ€" speaking community, and throughout the program, learnâ€" ing the second language is a priority. Katimavik provides food, lodging, transportation and basic expenses for program acâ€" tivities. Last September, five young people from our area joined Katimavik, a program funded federally by the Secretary of State which has been operating every year since 1977. Pam Jansen of Elmira, Robert Pinnell of Baden, and Terri Meinzinger, Chrissy Krebs, and Andre Alâ€" leyne of Waterloo were selected to join 1,200 other Canadians between the ages of 17 and 21 to participate in Katimavik‘s nine month program. Where would you find young people willing to work hard for a salary of one dollar a day for 9 months, and a $1,000 honorarium when they finish? Where? Right in the Waterloo area... It seems to me very important that the youth of Canada be able to discover for themselves the diversity and vastness of this country, not only through school books and television, but through personal experiences and direct contact. ; Since 1977, 5356 young Canaâ€" dians have been involved in this voluntary service program. On average there is a 20â€"25 per cent early termination rate, so the terms are not ideal for everyone. One Waterloo area participant said that the rules and regulaâ€" tions must be adhered to strictly, and that $1 a day spending money made life difficult at times. But generally, most seem to find Katimavik a worthwhile experiâ€" ence â€" a breathing space after secondary school in which they can learn about and contribute to our nation. For many it gives them a chance to organize their thoughts and sort out their ambiâ€" tions for the future.
