By MARK WESSEL Seven months ago, plans for a shopping centre on the corner of Erb St. and Hallman Rd. were declared premature by the city‘s planning committee. Proponents of the development were told to come back when they had proof that the centre would be a good moneyâ€"making operation that wouldn‘t hurt local business. Ken Bowers, a resiâ€" dent in the area, exâ€" pressed concern at Monday‘s meeting over same of the possible routes for the Columâ€" bia St. extension which would necessitate reâ€" On Monday, a delegation of businessmen representing the Beechwood Core Shopping Centre visited city council, to argue that the project would not only work â€" but was a necessity for the community. "I feel the community needs this centre, and needs it right away," said Keith Hansen, viceâ€"president of the developer for the project, Major Holding and Developments Ltd. Hansen presented a study which argues the new facility would be economically viable, and would not seriously hurt competing centres. Having already examined this study, the city‘s planning department supported this claim. But it was Hansen‘s revelation that there would be a Zehrs grocery store in the centre which sold council on the idea. The Zehrs store plays an important role in the new centre, using up just under half of the total floor space available.
