Then there are the selfâ€"made millionaires and others who have managed to earn far more than might have been expected, based on their educational level. These ‘"overâ€" rewardeds," she finds tend to have.the large families in society today. In either instance, she says, the group she is studying is "status inconsistent."" There is a gap between expectaâ€" tions and actual achievement. She says she feels the people who manage to be overâ€"rewarded in life might have gone for large families beâ€" cause they didn‘t yet realize the "quality" that can go into the life of a rich child â€" the cars, violin lessons, trips abroad, and so forth. They didn‘t have such things themâ€" selves, and they feel their children can get by without them too. As a result, Dr. McDaniel feels, the newly rich don‘t see children as being as costly as would people with "old money" and they feel they can readily afford a large number of them. The underâ€"rewardâ€" eds, on the other hand, are uncertain about their economic status to the point where they translate that uncerâ€" tainty into actions in the home. ‘"As a result, they tend to have fewer chilâ€" dren than I would have expected," she says.
