Family size may be barometer of success PROF FINDS Dennis Wendland (left), director of the Laurel Creek Outdoor Education Centre, gives inâ€" struction on maple syruping to students of N.A. MacEachern School in Waterioo. The boys, Patrick Neuman (left), Grade 1, and Norbert Horvat, Grade 5, are among 2600 area school students taking part in a special maple syrup program at the centre. _ What kind of people in this day and age have large families? According to Dr. Susan McDaniel, University of Waterloo sociologist, family size may not have much to do with how much money one has, or what church one goes to. It may not CWL women elect executive The St. Agnes Cathoâ€" lic Women‘s League in Waterloo elected a new executive at its recent annual meeting. Elected were Eva Huschilt, president; Arlene Soehner, Betty Ruetz and Barbara Stumpf, vice presiâ€" dents; Barbara Weber, assistant viceâ€"presiâ€" dent; Peggy Jack, reâ€" cording secretary; Rita Hammer, correâ€" sponding secretary; Pat Ernewein, treasurâ€" er; and Jean Weland, past president. At the meeting, league members reviewed acâ€" tivities from the past year, which included a Mother‘s Day Tea & Craft Sale, Autumn Palette dessert card party, mini retreat and Mother & Daughter communion breakfast. The league, which stresses awareness for the needs of others, provided financial asâ€" sistance last year to a family in India, Birth right, Brownie and Guide groups, and other local _ agencies, and sent clothing to Attawapiskat, a misâ€" sion in northern Ontarâ€" io. even be a matter of personal choice. One group tending to have sizeable families, she says, comprises people who have exâ€" ceeded expectations â€" who have made it in life beyond their fonâ€" dest dreams. Dr. McDaniel has been looking at people whose incomes are eiâ€" ther welERabove or well below what they ought to be expected to be. An example of an imcome below expectations, she says, would be a highly educated person who has suddenly been fired and finds himself or herself on welfare or on enemployment inâ€" surance. People in this ‘"underâ€"rewarded‘‘ group do not have large families. Then there are the selfâ€"made millionaires and others who have managed to earn far more than might have been expected, based on their educational level. These ‘"overâ€" rewardeds," she finds tend to have.the large families in society today. In either instance, she says, the group she is studying is "status inconsistent."" There is a gap between expectaâ€" tions and actual achievement. She says she feels the people who manage to be overâ€"rewarded in life might have gone for large families beâ€" cause they didn‘t yet realize the "quality" that can go into the life of a rich child â€" the cars, violin lessons, trips abroad, and so forth. They didn‘t have such things themâ€" selves, and they feel their children can get by without them too. As a result, Dr. McDaniel feels, the newly rich don‘t see children as being as costly as would people with "old money" and they feel they can readily afford a large number of them. The underâ€"rewardâ€" eds, on the other hand, are uncertain about their economic status to the point where they translate that uncerâ€" tainty into actions in the home. ‘"As a result, they tend to have fewer chilâ€" dren than I would have expected," she says. She says she has checked her thesis against Canadian census data and it has been verified by the data. * £ .1_’ t‘! CMAMOE Anâ€"O \‘ Al :M‘L‘J.h 'H:nu".- Q(’MCQ.. worthy of your confidence.
