Maggie and Pierre come(s) to town ‘‘Maggie & Pierre," a funny and touching play exploring two of Canada‘s most colourful and controversial personalities, will be presented by the University of Waterioo Arts Centre in the Humanities Theatre tonight and tomorrow at 8 The Canadian hit, which won the 1981 Dora Mavor Moore Award for best new play, was researched, written by and also stars 26â€"yearâ€"old Linda Griffiths. Griffiths is a multiâ€"talented young Canadian woman who was encouraged and aided in creating Maggie and Pierre by Paul Thompson of Toronto‘s Theatre Passe Muraille. The show was originally presented at Passe Muraille and quickly became the toast of the Toronto theatre season. She is one of several writer/performers who mark the coming of age of Canada‘s indigenous Collective Theatre Movement. She was born in Montreal, and after completing university, worked with a Youth Theatre touring northern Quebec, and later in Montreal at Theatre Lab. Summer of 1977 found her in Montreal with Theatre Passe Muraille‘s presentation of Les Maudits Anglais. This was the show in which she first played Pierre Trudeau. Director Paul Thompson was inspired and suggested that she develop a oneâ€"woman show about the Trudeaus. In the meantime, while the idea developed, Great Britain‘s Pam Brighton taped her for the title role of Toronto Workshop Production‘s St. Joan of the Stockyards. In 1979 she toured Great Britain in Passe Muraille‘s The Farm Show â€" a unique, successful venture. After a holiday in Europe, she came home knowing what her next project would be. ... He‘s been far more than a director"‘, she says. ‘‘We would work together for four to five hours daily debating what to put in, what to leave out, and how to shape it ... together we hit upon the idea of Henry. He‘s a composite of several Ottawa newsmen 1 talked to. It was important to meet Trudeau. A press contact gave me the idea of wangling an invitation to the Governorâ€"Generâ€" al‘s Reception. Trudeau took a chance on me. He was trusting and spontaneous and I wish never to betray that trust. I had hoped to meet Margaret too, but I never have. I do feel however, I understand the person she is, and this fantasy I have fashioned, with Paul‘s help, is sympathetic to both Margaret and Pierre Trudeau." The entire summer of 1979, Griffiths researched Maggie and Pierre. Her notebooks began to burst. At this point she began to work with Paul Thompâ€" son. at the tennis â€" 3 wind protected, illuminated tennis courts â€" practice wall â€" no court fees â€" group lessons for adults and children at no extra charge. â€" scheduled fun tournaments (1st tournament Sun.
