The orchestra had just completed its rendition of the Bruckner symâ€" phony no. 7 in E in the second half of the proâ€" gram and conductor Raffi Armenfan was walking onto the stage for a third curtain call to prolonged applause, but apparently without anâ€" yone on their feet. Within a moment, some in the front row seemed to take their cue from Kraus. and by the time Armenian had By Philip Jaisevac It appears veteran concert pianist Lili Kraus was the instigator of two standing ovations at last Sunday‘s perforâ€" mance at the Centre in the Square One was for herself as solo pianist, performing Mozart‘s piano concerto in D minor, K 466 and the other was for the Kitchener â€" Waterloo Symphony Orchestra. I‘m not sure that my perception is correct, but this is what apâ€" peared to happen The National Arts Centre Orchestra Semyon Bychkov, Guest Conductor _ : March 18, 8:00 p.m. at The Centre in the Square Walter Prystawski, Violin Rowland Floyd, Oboe Armas Maiste, Piano Bloch Concerto Grosso No 1 for String Orchestra and Soto Piano J.S. When Kraus rose to her feet. it seemed an affirmation that yes. inâ€" deed, the orchestra had* performed as well as one imagined At the conclusion of her performance. she took the rare step of adâ€" But perhaps some weren‘t sure if it was apâ€" propriate to do the same for the hometown orâ€" chestra. performing without a solo name arâ€" tist It had been easy, earâ€" lier on, to accord a standing ovation to the legendary Krays herâ€" self. It was as though Kraus had sparked the demonstration by inadâ€" vertently encouraging some of the concertâ€" goers to divest themse}â€" ves of their timidity reached centre stage, he and the orchestra were enjoying a _ rousing standing ovation from much of the audience "a finely disciptined and exhilarating ensemble" â€" "a national treasure" â€" Tickets $6, $8, $10 (Students, Seniors, $1.50 off) from the Sponsored by MTD Products Ltd an orchestra of frontâ€"rank standing" â€" New York Times entre box office, 578â€"1570 If this is the maturing of the orchestra and a demonstration of the exâ€" treme â€" professionalism conductor Armenian is capable of evoking the local symphony is on its way to establishing itâ€" self as a formidable preâ€" The orchestra,. even with its swelled ranks for the massive, Wagâ€" nerianâ€"like symphony no. 7. performed with a precision, depth and able performances from all sections that I‘d yet heard in any previous concert. dressing the audience, telling people how the joy of music ‘"is of heaâ€" ven,‘" and addging how fortunate she felt to perâ€" form with all three inâ€" gredients of the right conductor, orchestra and hall. The orchestra‘s perâ€" formance of the Bruckner rates in my books as their most highlyâ€"disciplined and thoroughly accomplishâ€" ed performance of the season One did not feel any patronizing attitude in this gesture, and neither is there a feeling that the ovation given the orâ€" chestra when it later performed alone wasn‘t truly deserved London Times Toronto Star sence among the orchesâ€" tras of Canada Granted, the members were a little loose in parts of the previous performance of the Moâ€" zart, in their supportive role to Kraus, lagging noticeably in sections or with an uneasy tension existing in spots All _ sections _ perâ€" formed well, but the enâ€" larged horn section, the principal cellists and clarinetist Victor Sawa deserve to be singled out I can‘t say that I totalâ€" ly agree with her inâ€" terpretation of the Moâ€" zart. Regardless of any philosophy to let the music stand or sing on its own without too much push and by recogâ€" nizing the original inâ€" strument it was written for, I still feel there was call to give more vitality and strength to some sections. All in all, it was a more than satis: ing night at the symphony. And it was nice to hear and see an artist of the calibre of Kraus extend her hearty approval to local proceedings. Nonetheless, they perâ€" formed capably and then later capped the evening by performing brilliantâ€" ly in the Bruckner As for Kraus herself, she was the picture of calm,. cool presence without any loss of afâ€" fection or feeling for the music she performed However, especially in the most lyrical mo ments. Kraus demonâ€" strated a remarkable grasp of the inner beauty of this Mozart work. one of the comâ€" poser‘s more moody and dynamic pieces. And she portrayed that easy grace which is the mark of a genius at the piano, making. all things seem so effortless while performing even the most difficult pasâ€" sages.
