_A candidates‘ meeting an uneventful affair By Mike Strathdee The University of Waterioo‘s Theatre of the Arts was the setting Monday for an all candidates‘ meeting which produced neither theatre nor particularly interestâ€" ing politics in the provincial election campaign. . Waterloo North Liberal candidate Herb Epp and NDP candidate Robert Needham addressed an audience of about 50 students at the noonday forum. jointly sponsored by the Waterloo feâ€" deration of student‘s and Kâ€"W Probe, an environmentalist organization. Labbett‘s campaign manager, Murray Matthews, told the Chronicle that the WLU commitment had been made prior to the organization of the U of W meetâ€" ing. Matthews added that although the Conservatives attempted to send a replaâ€" cement for Labbett, last minute probâ€" lems made this impossible. Both Epp and Needham gave 15 minute speeches, which were followed by quesâ€" tions from the floor. ~ To these, both candidates gave several nonâ€"answers, although Epp had a little more variety in the way he would seemâ€" ingly skirt an issue, saying such things as ‘‘I‘m sure we‘ve given some thought to it‘ or "our party is on record as favoring a study." j 55 Scott Street, Kitchener Phone 742â€"1481 Store offers Diabetic related products f Office supports literature, memâ€" berships etc. The event became a "some candidaâ€" te‘s meeting‘‘ due to the absence of Conâ€" servative candidate Bob Labbett who was addressing a group of Wilfrid Laurier University Conservatives at the time of the forum. Epp‘s Speech was environmentally priented and consisted of an attack on the present Conservative government‘s ‘‘inadequate legislation‘" in this area. Epp charged that for the past decade, the Conservatives have failed to enforce pollution emission control standards for such large scale polluters as INCO in Sudbury. Epp said that INCO produces one of the highest levels of sulphur dioxâ€" ide emissions in the province of Ontario. Citing the dangers of acid rain polluâ€" tion (which is caused by sulphur dioxide emissions), Epp said a Liberal governâ€" ment would require the stringent enforâ€" cement of environmental legislation in regards to INCO and others. On the subject of industrial waste disâ€" posal, which he.views as a serious probâ€" lem, Epp said that by 1985 there will be 80 million gallons of industrial wastes produced per year in the province. _ Of this, Epp said 30 per cent should be considered hazardous. Needham‘s speech dealt largely with economic issues. He said university cutâ€" backs and the lack of universality in the provision of social services are only part of a much larger problem in the overall structure of the Ontario economy. Needham maintains public ownership is the answer to this problem and he pointed to the success of Ontario Hydro. as an example of valuable public enâ€" awarded annually on the basis of academic standing and financial need approximate value: $2,000.00 each. applicant must be aâ€"Canadian citizen between 20 and 30 years of age | preference â€" first to a student whose family resides in the Regional Municipality of Waterloo â€" second to ‘a student planning postâ€" graduate study at the University of Waterioo or Wilfrid Laurier University TWO BURSARIES FOR ONE YEAR OF FULL TIME POST GRADUATE STUDY ' IN CANADA POST â€" GRADUATE BURSARY DEADLINE FOR THE RECEIPT OF APPLICATION APRIL 30 > Application forms available by writing: Municipal Education Secretary, I0DE., 1902â€"11 Margaret Ave.. Needham also claimed that at present, Ontarians lose 40 cents per hour in wages due to taxation, which puts them in the second highest tax bracket in Canada. M In the area of education policy, Needâ€" ham said a NDP government would freeze tuition fees, as well as reâ€"examinâ€" ing the Ontario Student Assistance Proâ€" gram to ensure flexibility for those who need aid most. The candidates responded to a number of questions which dealt with such diverâ€" gent topics as abortion, separate school systems, censorship, energy conservaâ€" tion, discounts for student transit riders and party E)siu‘ons on OHIP . Neither Epp nor Needham seemed to have much trouble responding to the very general questions posed them. However, }ten a member of the Waâ€" terloo gay community asked a question about discrimination on the basis of sexâ€" ual orientation, both candidates said their respective parties favour safeâ€" guards against discrimination on these grounds, but would not commit themselâ€" ves to moving such an amendment in the legislature if elected. Both candidates appeared eager to move on to the next question and refused to elaborate on the reasons for their stands on the issue. The audience applauded politely on seâ€" veral occasions, but did not give a noâ€" ticeable show of preference to either Epp or Needham. This reaction appears understandable, given the uneventful nature of the meetâ€" â€" F ights Inflation @ : By holding the AN ‘{' j Mpglis::]l;gi;;tl‘?c y \ \A%&\A COUPONS Wï¬mfmï¬â€"o&;&] i SHAMPOO !| nair couour | i & SET }}SHMampoo & SET} 1 T : only I F 1 â€" LC lonly ‘BREEZY CUT:! | For Men & Women j j 1 â€" Precision Cut & 1;;, | ~â€"a Ww im 6 i' l l 4.50 :!w» 10.45§ | I Regular 5.45 _ || Regular 12.45 I | _ Long Hair Extra |I Long Hair Extra j 1 Expires March 31/81 |I Expires March 31/81 | â€" Hours â€" Morn.â€"Tues. 9â€"5, Wed.â€"Fri. 9â€"8, Sat. 8:30â€"4:30 GUELPH LOCATION: Woodiawn Centre at Hwy. #6 WATERLOO LOCATION: University Square Plaza (Behind Tim Horton‘s on University Ave.) 886â€"1980 BP % i WITH THIS COUPON, FOR MEN & WOMEN Regular 9.95 Long Hair Extra Expires March 31/81 Cut&Curl 7.95 No Appointment Necessary ,‘Jk-â€"" WITH THIS Couron | (Long Hair Extra) i Regular 29.95 | save 5.00 | LPCIL _ ke 1 c% l Exrpires March 31, 1981
