But where will everyone park? by Stewart Sutheriand When planners recently unveiled designs for the $4â€"million Seaâ€" gram‘s Museum. to be built at the corner of Erb and Caroline Sts downtown. they left unanswered the question of where the more than 350.000 visitors e?ecled to tour the buildlw by its fifth year of operation would park their cars. In fact. the company‘s architecâ€" tural drawings maï¬ no provision for any onâ€"site parking at the muâ€" seum City staff aren‘t worried hoâ€" wever They are studyving several parkâ€" ing alternatives. icluding making use of existing cityâ€"owned parking lots around the museum site and the addition of more parking space around the Waterloo Arena Mayor Marjorie Carroll recently told the Chronicle that parking faâ€" cilities are not a "major problem â€" with the museum proposal **When you‘re looking at millions of dollars coming into the city you don‘t worry about parking all that much ... at least not right away. Carroll said. "There are several alâ€" ternatives that can be used and we‘ll be studying them _ Carroll noted the city had spent about $50.000 last year to expand parking at the Waterloo Arena. She said the additional parking spaces are "not utilized to their fullest exâ€" tent. ‘‘There are spaces there that aren‘t being used and we have a lot of cityâ€"owned land around the arena that hasn‘t been developed." Carroll said. *The soil isn‘t suiâ€" table for buildings but it would be ideal for surface parking. Tom Slomke. director of planâ€" ning. says the city owns more than 68,000 square feet of land in the area that he said could provide about 194 parking spaces if deveâ€" loped . 100 KING ST.SOUTH, WATERLOO 886â€"0210 73 KING ST. It could get pretty busy in the parking lot if it‘s used for the muâ€" seum while we‘re staging consecuâ€" tive events at the arena. But that doesn‘t happen very often. so 1 don‘t anticipate a problem,." Dieâ€" trich said The parking garage is recomâ€" mended in the recentlyâ€"released downtown study commussioned by the city to examine ways of strengthening the city‘s core area Dietrich said surface parking at the arena is ~adequate for this faâ€" cility‘‘ but if needed,. ~there‘s plenty of potential parking spaces on surrounding undeveloped land. He said the arena presently uses lots at the Marsland Centre,. the Waterioo Public Library and Knox Presbyterian church when large crowds attend events at the arena ‘‘With additional parking spaces and using these lots we could comâ€" fortably hold all the cars that would come to both the museum and the arena." Dietrich said Another parking alternative mentioned by Carroll involves building a parking structure imâ€" mediately north or south of Waâ€" terloo Square. Carroll said yisitors could park at the structure and travel to the museum on a proposed miniâ€"bus system. But if the city expands parking at Waterloo Arena the lot could be ‘pretty corï¬ested" at times. acâ€" cording to Howie Dietrich. superâ€" visor of arenas and parks for the city In any event. the city has more than two years to sort things out. with the Seagram‘s museum not scheduled for completion until late In Wilfrid Laurier Uniâ€" versity (WLU) will parâ€" ticipate in Elderhostel. an experience for older citizens on the move this summer from July 5 to July 18 Elderhostel is based on the belief that reâ€" tirement does not have to mean withdrawal. that one‘s later years are an opportunity to enjoy new experiences B T:TIANNIVERSARY BROADLOOM iA â€" SALE & FAEE ESTIMATES ® BUDGET TERMS Would like to extend a perâ€" sonal invitation to all valued customers and friends to join him in this 14th Anniversary Sale It‘s one of the biggest and best ever The 1981 catalogue deâ€" e e 3 \ . / 3 1P 4 Value #_ "o m "P EED (ECWiDO EO GWnOZ EPCE 6 PECpSC@ P C PE Our location ># rors, @@ 6 490 WEBER ST.
