Wemesday to View and discuss plans for the Beechwood, Beechwood West and Westmount sections of Watedoo. Residents' were invited to comment on plans for particular neighborhoods to allow them to have their say on how the plan will affect their properties “The turnout was higher than some meetings we've held in the past, bat I wouldn't say It was unusual to have so many people attend," said Tom Slomke, director of planning. “They seemed to be interested mostly In the environmental impact of proposed developments on some of the wooded areas," he said, Bin while the attendance was high, there was more viewing than discussion at last week's meeting. He said people were mainly "curious" with the city's plans for the three areas. The city's planners are studying the zoning of vacant lands near St. Jerome's College in the Beechwood plan to decide if the zoning should be changed from the present institutional designs- tion to residential. "One resident in the neighborhood pointed out that when and if the area is developed there could be a drainage problem," Slomke said. "We're aware of a slight problem now, but it could get worse if it isn't developed properly So far though. there aren't any plans on the board for that section." Other residents in the Beechwood area were concerned with a possible loss of parkland if more residential development is permitted, "Some people were concerned that if there is more residential construction in the Keatsway area there would be a loss of trees and they sug- gested we rezone the area from residential to multiple family in an effort to preserve the exist- ing trees," Slomke said. “That way we could group high density buildings in an area where there are no trees and preserve the treed open " exposun- - ern..., " or " exp ,.....-,. Siornke said there was no discussion on the city's proposals for the Westmount plan Pian- ners are looking at the industrial zoning near Westmount Place plan as well as the commer- cial zoning of lands around the Equitable Life In- surance Co. of Canada Ltd. building at Erb St, and Westmount Rd. "It's our thinking that there is too much land around the building that's designated commer- cial and it may be time to remneit residential. It could be put to better use. but we'll be looking at that before anything is finalized, “The city will either agree or disagree with their concerns and incorporate their ideas into the new official plan." Slomke said, “We want to draft a sound plan that will consist of both public and city input that will meet the city's demands and direction for the W's.“ spaces around the buildings," The Beechwood West plan features a proposed plan development at the corner of Hellman Rd and EN St. (mud: the developer wants to start banding but council has termed premature. Once again, residents were concerned about the existing parkland in the area. "It was suggested that the city designate the two woodlots as either open space or an environ- mentally significant area to preserve the trees," he said The public discussion and concerns will be taken into account when the city drafts its or ficial plan this summer, Slomke said. The next in the series of public meetings will take place tonight at 7:30 pm. at the Marsland Centre when the public will be invited to com- ment on plans for the Willowdale.
