PAGE 8 â€"â€" WATERLOO CHRONICLE, WEDNESDA Y Alderman Richard Biggs. who sits on the tranâ€" sit advisory committee with Henry, noted that Kitchener Transit expects to begin a new route along Fischer and Hallman Roads when they are linked in September and the original Glasgow exâ€" tension, even if approved. would only be temâ€" porary By Stewart Sutheriand Waterloo will ask Kitchener Transit to study yet another bus route proposal in its ongoing quest for transit service to the Maple Heights section of the city, council meeting in committee decided Monday. The city has abandoned its proposal for a Glasâ€" gow Street route extension in favor of extending the Hallman Road route to serve residents in the area. Aldermanm Robert Henry told council the cost of the Glasgow route extension would be "too high for what the city would get out of it _ Mayor Marjorie Carroll told council the Hallâ€" man route exterfsion would offer a ‘worthwhile experiment" to see if riders can be attracted to the transit system early in the development of subdivisions in the city Henry said the estimated cost tor extending the Hallman route would be in the "$16,000 to $20,000 range ‘ and the city would be wiser to have the route extended rather than the Glasgow route which is favored by the Maple Heights residents But alderman Doreen Thomas. who has been requesting transit service to Maple Heights since last summer, told council that ridership on the extended Hallman route would be low because the residents "made it quite clear they weren‘t interested in that route."" Council opts for another bus route , JANUARY 14, 1981 Kitchener then offered full service but the resiâ€" dents called the compromise solution "unaccepâ€" table" and most: Waterloo aldermen said it was unnecessary and too expensive. The residents had requested peakâ€"hour service (6 am. to 9 a m. and 3 p.m. to 6 p m.) Monday to Friday primarily for studénts attending high schools in downtown Kitchener and Waterloo. Waterioo endorsed the proposal but it was rejectâ€" ed by Kitchener council The Maple Heights residents have been lobbyâ€" ing for transit service to their neighborhood since early last summer Waterloo then decided to approach the Ontario Municipal Board (OMB:) and, at the same time, ask Kitchener to provide full servicte to the area on a trial basr But Waterloo reversed its decision on the trial service when the residents proposed yet another alternative route to Maple Heights â€" o The city wanted the new route proposal studied but Kitchener Mayor Morley Rosenberg said there would be no new transit service to Waterloo until the city dropped its request for the OMB hearing . And so. afterâ€"all the months of wrangling and threats of no new service and OMB hearings. the Glasgow route extension has been dropped and a new proposal submitted to Kitchener Transit Council dropped its OMB hearing request as a gesture of ~goodwill" and also after aldermen objected to the hearing‘s estimated $5.000 cost.. The matter then came before the transit adâ€" visory committee last Friday where the Hallman Road route extension was discussed but no action was taken at that time .
