But last weekend. concertâ€"goers enjoyed the rich and sonorous Brahms Piano Concerto No.1 in D Minor while orchestra and soloist performed admirably well together In the previous conâ€" cert of the symphony with a guest pianist â€" Latvianâ€"born _ Arthur Ozolins â€" there was a lacklustre performance by the orchestra, which seemed ill at ease and out of kilter with the pianist. Neither was the Wilâ€" lan concerto performed on that occasion an exâ€" citing prece of music in itself That being the case, this is a difficult review to write because I could find little to fault in last weekend‘s performance by the Kitchenerâ€"Waâ€" Alerloo Symphony Orâ€" chestra and guest pianâ€" ist Anton Kuerti at the Centre in the Square. By Philip Jaisevac A critic‘s job is made easier when there are things to criticize, parâ€" trcularly in the negative Little to fault in performance The orchestra â€"reâ€" sponded to Kuerti‘s subâ€" tle direction while Arâ€" menian held the reins One couid sense his communication with not only Armenian and the orchestra as a whole. but individual members in key passages â€" and the result was splendid Armenian no doubt had the lead hand, but Kuerti, through nods of the head, hand moveâ€" ments and glances toâ€" wards the orchestra members. portrayed an easy sense of total involâ€" vement â€" with every aspect of the Brahms concerto . Actually, from: this listener‘s vantage point. it seemed almost as though Kuerti himself, were conducting as well as performing, with Arâ€" menian largely blocked from view by the piano top The orchestra perâ€" formed with verve and confidence and Kuerti meshed his sensitive dynamics with feeling and precision well as technique into a _ tight and all worked toâ€" cohesive whole gether to produce one of The orchestra perâ€" _ the more memorable formed with verve and _ performances of this confidence and Kuerti â€" concert season ENTERTAINMENT Often times. one may appreciate the technical There was a parâ€" ticular apex of musical excitement in the alleâ€" gro molto vivace,. notaâ€" bly in the marchâ€"like passages through which Armenian guided the orâ€" chestra with grace and just the right measure of gusto â€" that is, just a hair‘s breadth short of too much Perhaps as enjoyable as the Brahms concerto was the orchestra‘s renâ€" dering of Tchaikovsky‘s Symphony No.6. the Pathetique. But both managed to straddle the tension when this occurred. perâ€" haps even adding to the success of the outcome Granted. there were a few minor flaws. Kuert: halfâ€"missed at least half a dozen upper octave particularly staccato notes and orchestra and soloist came dangerousâ€" ly close at two points to falling apart IT PAYS TD ADVERTISE .. ADVERTISE WHERE /T PAYS This is obviously a subjective matter for the most part, but it can turn listening to the most _ capable _ perâ€" formers into a disapâ€" pointing, if not irritating affair. j However, no such disâ€" appointment existed for this listener of Tchaiâ€" kovsky‘s Pathetique by mastery of an orchestra or musician, but not agree with the interpreâ€" tation or style rendered a particular prece Available at the Church Offices or at Concert Time INFORMATION 886â€"1673 (Cambndge 621 2175) TICKETS $67 Stydent/Somor $4 (Cambridge $5 ) FRIDAY, January 16th St. Andrew‘s Presbytemian.
