With two universities in Waâ€" terloo, it is easy to become blase about the advantages these instituâ€" tions afford. This however is a sad mistake. If you were intending to plead igâ€" norance, this column will rectify that situation regarding campus museums in the next three weeks. It is clear that the Museum and Archives of Games at the Univerâ€" sity of Waterloo has nothing to hide. If they did they certainly would not have agreed to glass walls. The museum has just moved to the centre of the first floor in the administration services building. There are over 500 games and over . 1,000 documents relating to games in the museum. Special disâ€" plays change monthly and a game of the month is featured in a winâ€" dow display in an authentic room setting. The first such display is tentatively scheduled to be Chinâ€" ese. These monthly features will represent different cultures in Canâ€" ada. ap g \T C *¢/ "The The museum has copies of games that date back 5,000 years up to inâ€" novative electronic games. There are examples of braille games, a display of Eskimo and Inuit games and one of North American Indian games. A slide and tape show deals with 10,000 years of games from the paintings of primative preliterate people through the ages to modern games. ‘ The museum is eight years old and operated by U of W with a grant from the Ministry of Culture and Recreation. Several games have been donated by manufactâ€" urers (the museum has over eighty computer games). Items are also loaned by private citizens to the museum but the major collection is owned by the museum. At present, there is an exhibit of early twentiethâ€"century games on loan from a private individual as well as a game rug which has seâ€" v@eral game boards woven into its surface. Many people marvel at the beauty of the carved wooden African game boards while others lean toward the modern electronic games. and monographs Elliott Avedon is a professor of the sociology of leisure at the uniâ€" versity and has been curator of the museum for eight years. The museum is open Monday to Friday, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2 pm. to 5 p.m. Groups can make arrangements for weekends or evening visits by calling 888â€"6380 The art gallery on the second floor in the modern languages building at U of W has been open since 1962. The gallery presents a wide range of exhibits from sculpâ€" ture and drawings to creative cosâ€" tume body sculpture. Starting December 15 and runâ€" ning to February 15 there will be a show of Virgil Burnett‘s work. Mr. Burnett is from Waterloo‘s faculty of Fine Art and his work includes book illustrations, drawings and paintings Mr. Burnett will give an illusâ€" trated lecture at 8: 15 on December 15, of drawings from his new book Towers at the Edge of a World. All shows are open to the public and gallery hours are Monday to Friday from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm and Sundays from 2:00 to 5:00 pm. The gallery attempts to exhibit local artists as well as the leisure time art work of the staff. faculty and students at the university. In March the gallery will exhibit the after hour talent of the campus poâ€" pulation. According to the gallery adâ€" ministrator,. Marlene Bryan, there is some terrific talent. The gallery has 285 running feet and full time staff of one and a half. (The half is Peter Mckay who is in charge of inâ€" stallation).
