O fi e _ s:sJ' cl' $6496 l, 906 RE Csee' Mere Gas stations staying open Gregorio: Asimis, owner of A.G. Car Service on Erb St., had told men that motorists were getting poor service and complained he was los ing business to Bridgeport service stations that are permitted to remain open M hours a day. Asimis is now taking full advantage of the new bylaw and says "my customers are very happy ... they must be because they keep com- ing in to buy gas until we close atAt pm. Gary Voigt, owner of the Westmount Shell Gas Bar on Westmount Rd., said "people are generally happy" with the extended hours, but at the same time he said he has noticed "no great volume increase" in gas sold. "We could see an increase once people in Kitchener learn about the extended hours. It's not that well known in Kitchener yet," Voight said. Graham Petroleum on Bridgeport Rd. is also open longer on week nights, but manager Bruce Rice said the amount of gas sold because of the extended hours has not increased. The Phillip and Columbia Car Was" on Phillip St. also stays open until 9 pm. and employee Rosanne Crawford said there has been a "mar- ginal increase" overall sales. lCommuod from pog- 1) Council approved the gas bylaw last momh atter a local operator requested an extension of the hours for sale of gas. "There are still a lot of complaints (from the public) over the Sunday rotating schedule, but there's not much 1 can do about that," Asimis said. "i'm happy with the longer hours because I've noticed Y big increase in the volume of gas I'm selling." Kathy Boyko, an employee at the Beaver Ser- vice Centre on King St., said there has been "no real feedback" from customers about the ex- tended hours at her station and she hagn't no- ticed any substantial increase in the amount of gas sold. We're staying open every night on a trial basis to see how it's going to work out but I don't real- ly know if it's going to become a regular thing," Rice said. Linda Kennel, an employee at Rott's Shell Self Service on King St., said the extended hours "have been worth it" because there has been a "slight increase" in volume sales. _ But she said, “I really don‘t know if it (the new bylaw) is worth it because what's gained in the evening is lost in the morning because there's no 7:30 a.m. rush any longer. Mike Beska, co-manager of Sherif's Motors on King St., also said his sales have seen a mar- ginal increase and the public "mostly favors" the longer hours because "they can now buy gas while grocery shopping." "it's just not worthwhile," Gibel said. "We might sell $50 worth of gas but it's not enough to pay the hydro bill. But we'll try it until the end of the year to see what happens." Carol McGregor, manager of the Canadian Tire Pit Stop on Weber St., said there has been a 10 per cent increase in sales there. _ "Our customers seem to be really happy with the longer hours because, they can spread their time around while shopping and don't have to rush," McGregor said. But just because Joe Gibel. manager of Gibel Sunoco Service at Bridgeport Rd. and Weber St., keeps his station open until 9 p.m. week nights, it doesn't mean he's happy with the ex- tended hours. Harry Muraisami. owner of Toto Service Centre Ltd. at Weber and Columbia Ste, said he "can't allow to stay open" until 9 pm because his as sales "aren't enough to pay for the over- head or staff wages. “The old bylaw was better because at least one or two operators could make money This way no one makes any money," Muraisami claimed. Andy Gorghiaves, manager of A and A Texaco on Albert St., said he keeps his station open until 9 pm. only on Thursday and Friday and even on those nights he has noticed no increase in sales "People seem to be happy though because they can buy gas when they're going to the liquor store which is close to the station," Gorghiaves said. Dan Randal, manager of Randal's Automo- tive Service at King and Weber Sts., said he too only keeps his business open Thursday and Fri- day nights because he says "there's no sense in me staying open ... there's not that many cust- omers at night and it's just a waste of time." Meanwhile, some operators are still ap- parently concerned about the conmversy that surrounds the question of longer hours and the split in ranks it has caused among operators. Pioneer Petroleum: on Weber St. is not stay- ing open week man: because manager “Red" McCausland said “the company is still looking into the situation. _ Three people contacted by phohe refused to give their names or offer information. The person who answered the phone at Sun- shine Marine and Auto Service on Weber/Em St. refused to identify himself but did say "the whole thing ( the bylaw controversy) is crazy. We're not making any more money under the new bylaw ... they (the city) should have kept the old bylaw." And the person who answered at Joe's Texaco Service Station on Bridgeport Rd. said "I'rn not saying anything ... I got in trouble before when I talked to a reporter." _ And at Columbia and Phillip Self Service the employee who answered the phone there said. "Urn not supposed to answer any questions from the media." CAN YOU AFFORD LEStLTHAN THE BEST? Far Farm tMormation Call WEIGHT WATCHERS, i% Authority, has many mum: to otter and here we just a in: .
