"’M,w‘gcâ€" a,‘w RON KEELING. CITY CLERK CITY HALL WATERLOO, ONTARIO at technical shortcomings, but Thursday‘s univerâ€" sity hockey matchâ€"up qaa" between Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks and Waâ€" terloo Warriors proâ€" duced a veritable gold mine of scoring opporâ€" tunities. Neither team seemed too anxious to take adâ€" vantage of them though and thus what was hyped up to be an early season mismatch turned into a nailbiting cliffhanger that literally was decidâ€" ed at the final buzzeer as Hawks escaped with a 3â€" 2 victory. Laurier, 7â€"1 winners over Waterloo in preâ€" season play, looked like they would map out the same course in this one as Bill Cameron scored twice in the first period to give Hawks a 2â€"0 lead. Hawks maintained the buffer but not the moâ€" mentum as WLU‘s capâ€" tain Daryl Benjamin and veteran Barry Reynard of UW exchanged second period goals. And in the third, after WLU missed glorious opportunities to put the icing on the cake, Waterloo stormed to within one on Reynard‘s second of the evening, and only a handful of spectacular saves by Hawk â€" goalie Terry Thompson preserved the victory. His finest moment came in the final seâ€" conds when he charged out to block Bill Lang‘s pointâ€"blank attempt with Waterloo‘s Dave Barrett on the bench for an extra attacker. Lang was too surprised to adjust to the sprawling goalie and Hawks had the two points â€" but not much more â€" in the bag. ‘‘As the game proâ€" gressed I thought Waâ€" terloo really came on," said Laurier coach Wayne Gowing, relieved yet not overlyâ€"enthusiasâ€" tic his club was pressed so tight for the win. Cameron, in his seâ€" cond year with Hawks, was singled out for his fine effort by Gowing, who also lauded the play of defenceman Brian Crombeen, who not only led several dangerous offensive thrusts, but also decked a handful of unsuspecting Warrmior forwards. And of course, Gowing did not overlook Thompson‘s key stops. Warriors were not touted to supply much in the way of opposition for Hawks, but UW boss Bob McKillop admired his club‘s spunk â€" in the final two periods. ‘‘Our effort in the first period was atrocious, but I‘m very pleased with the way the guys played in the second and third. We must have the Lancers atoned for their blunder Saturday though when they rallied for three goals in the final 10 minutes to upset Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks 5â€"4, giving Lancers their first win of the regular season. Warriors, who play in Guelph Thursday before entertaining Western Sunday at 7:30 p.m., are now. 1â€"2 on the year type of effort we did in the final two periods to be competitive in this league."~ The game but green Waterloo Warriors bagged goals on their first two shots Friday night at Waterloo Arena and carried that moâ€" mentum through to the end as they defeated Windsor 5â€"3 in one of the upsets of the early 1980â€" 81 OUAA season.
