The end is only the beginning C as Vikes NV finish in ï¬ __ style . ‘"I can‘t say that I saw the team (Vikings) wilt right then," said Easton. "I just told them right away ‘guys let‘s learn from our mistakes of ourâ€"other games, there‘s still an «entire game of football to be played‘. I don‘t really think that play hurt us that much:~ SportWaterloo *"When you look back, even the stats were quite close. those two big plays made the difference and that‘s the kind of game you like to be in.‘. tw < § ed oo Unfortunately, one of those ‘"big‘‘ plays came on Caâ€" meron‘s first play from scrimmage, and no one can really tell how much that initial momemtunt affected both teams. f By Rick Campbell Chronicle Sports Editor Waterloo Vikings‘ 1980 high school senior football season came to an end Friday at Cameron Heights when the home Gaels carved out a 21â€"7 quarterâ€"final victory. e But although Vikings will see no championship hardware this time around, they left the Cameron campus Friday with three intangibles every bit as valuable stuffed safely in their hip pockets. Pride, dignity, and a heck of a lot of class. In a fine hardâ€"knocking exhibition of high school ball the two clubs went at each other tooth and nail all afternoon. each taking its turn at seizing the momentum. / In the end there was no disputing the team that took better advantage of its opportunities won,‘but the final score belied the closeness of the competition. _ . 3 What started out as a routine handâ€"off from quarterback Frank Karai to back Bill Libbus around end turned into ecâ€" stacy moments later forâ€"the Cameron team and supporters as Libbus sliced through a pair of tacklers and headed off down the sidelines 84 yards for a touchdown. **We thought it was a really fine football game, we‘ve cerâ€" tainly got nothing to.be ashamed of," summed up WCI coach Darvy Easton. j Cameron threatened several times again in the half but key interceptions near or in Vikings end zone by Jeff Nickel and Fred Redekop stalled the Gaels charge. _ _ _ But the big play did Waterloo in again before the half as Karai, when right the finest quarterback in the league. found Libbus with a sideline arching pass that went for a 53â€" yard touchdown. _ But if Vikings were demoralized down 14â€"0 at the half. they sure didn‘t show it in the third quarter. j ‘‘*At halftime we told the guys there‘s not much we can say, not much we can do differently, we just have to go out and keep plugging," said Easton. "I thought we played well the first half ... their guy (Libbus) just showed what speed can do for you." 4 But in the third quarter Vikes showed what a little bit of power can do as they steamrolled over the Cameron defense to draw within seven. _ But although they pressed again, Vikes couldn‘t find payâ€" dirt and Camerqn righted its ship in the fourth quarter to score again after an interception deep in Waterloo‘s end. Assuming control at the Cameron 37, quarterback Phil Israel, back after a serious knee inju;y. took Vikings in to score utilizing the strong running of Bruce Loney and Jeff Mathers, who eventually cashed in from the one yard line. Shawn Mathers converted. Those thoughts must have entered everyone‘s mind at WCI as Vikings went into the contest without the services of versatile back Ian MacLean, who tore ankle ligaments Wedâ€" nesday in practice. He, as well as Jeff Mathers and safety Stu McCuaig were all on crutches Thursday from the same problem, but somehow Mathers and McCuaig played Friâ€" day. "It helped us finish the year on a high note, it would have been nice to win, but I‘m glad that at least it went that way rather than a whitewash," said Easton. ‘"We‘re not ready to concede that we‘re only an eighth place football club, we feel we‘re as competitive as everyone," said Easton. o use C ie It proved that was all she wrote, but until the end, the locals never gave up, a truly encouraging sign. oi ‘‘We think we could have done better than we did, but we‘re still pleased, and proud of the way the guys played this year. I think we showed that we‘re ready to be reckoned with and that‘s what we aimed for at the start. ‘"‘What‘s most important is the guys:are stil} enthusiastic. they‘ve started planning winter weight programs, they‘re thinking about next year already."
