Women make do in Wait for off-campus home - Writer Nearly half of the 49 first- year women students who expected to move into Wil- frid Laurier University's new off-campus residence Tuesday have found them- selves "temporarily billet- ed" at the Waterloo Motor Inn. Fred Nichols, dean of stu- dents at WLU, said in an in- terview that “last minute trimming and carpet lay- ing" lorced the eleventh hour change of plans. but none of the students was "surprised" because each was phoned and advised of the situation in advance. The cost of their hotel stay will be included in their nor- mal rent. The new residence, which is a privately owned old house with an addition built specifically for WLU, is lo- cated at 151 King St, N. and brings the total number of WLU's offcampus residen- ces to three. T The university operates off-campus housing at 8 Co- lumbia St. and IO Hickory St. The total number of ac- commodations will rise to 133 with the completion of the King St. building and will aid a little in the gener- al crunch on student hour ing. Wilfrid Laurier University's new off-campus women’s residence offers "resi- dence-style" accommodations with a kitchennette, livingroom, washroom. shared lounges and walk-out cedar balconies. A total of BO women will live in the building once construction is completed later this week. "The girls that have moved into the (King St.) building are extremely happy with the facilities and those that are at the Wa- terloo Motor Inn seem happy too," Nichols said "They know it won't belong By Stewart Sutherland until they'll be joining the others. In fact, they should be moved in by the end of the week." Five women will share each unit which contains a kitchenette, livingroom. washroom. shared lounges and walk-out cedar bal- conies. Nichols said he met with each student‘s parents be- fore leases were signed to make "everyone feel more comfortable" about their first experience living away from home. "The parents know what their daughters are moving into.the rules involved and the relationdiip the residen- cc)” with the university." he said. All three off-campus resi- dences are privately owned. but operated by WLU. Nichols' objective is to offer "residential style liv- ing" ko every first-year stu- dent who wants it and hopes to see another off-campus residence open before the beginning of the 1m school season. He also said there are still nearly 200 first-year stu- dents in need of housing this year. "We're in pretty good shape as far as women's housing goes, but the situa- tion is critical for guys this year. It's the complete op- posite of last year's situa- tion, and I can't explain the reasons for it.” Nichols said. .
