Karen Lobban is a sucâ€" cessful 20â€"yearâ€"old enâ€" trepreneur who says startâ€" ing a business isn‘t easy, but a ‘*‘very worthwhile exâ€" perience." The government loan plus â€"additional money from her father enabled her to buy materials, supplies and a new sewing machine, the only equipment needed to start the business. > The Waterloo resident, who designs and manufacâ€" tures Christmas crafts for a widespread market in Onâ€" tario and Quebec, is a comâ€" munications and â€"design stuâ€" dent at the Ontario College of Art. € Establishing a business out of her home for the sumâ€" mer seemed a natural step for Karen, who has ""always had ideas and enjoyed sewâ€" l..g." Her mother, Joan, recentâ€" ly operated a gift store called "Just a Little Someâ€" thing,‘""* and urged Karen to start her own manufacturâ€" ing business under the same Equipped with ideas, taâ€" lent, a penchant for hard work and backed by enâ€" couragement from her faâ€" mily, Karen decided to make a go of it. Being her own boss and using creative skills seemed an attractive alternative to spending another summer working in a warehouse, as she did last year. j **My â€" application went through in just two days," said Karen, who received $1,000, the maximum availaâ€" ble. She obtained an interestâ€" free loan through the provinâ€" ce‘s ‘"Experience ‘80‘" proâ€" gram, designed to assist stuâ€" dents starting their own summer business. _ Marketing products to reâ€" tailers was quite a challenâ€" ge, Karen said, and she was ‘‘really surprised and enâ€" couraged‘‘ when Holt Renâ€" frew, a national company, asked her to design and manufacture an exclusive gourmet line, including kitâ€" chen items such as aprons and oven mitts. Since then, she‘s received orders for her Christmas line (stockings, tree skirts, aprons, tablecloths, clotheâ€" speg dolls, santa sacks, jam bags and champagne bags) from Ogilvy‘s department store in Montreal and various small craft stores throughout Ontario. Karen is obviously pleased with the rewards of her first business <enâ€" deavour, which should inâ€" clude a profit of about $3,500 for the summer. ~But, as she found out, those rewards do not come easily or without a certain amount of struggle along the way. Karen said, ‘"running a business is a lot of hard work. I had no idea all that was involved." < WOOLNERS CATERING Waiting to hear from By Karla Wheeler Elmira & District Rod and Gun Club BANQUET HALL and Corn Roast 669â€"2166 Coming Events GROUNDS AUVGUST 9 Starting business not easy Karen Lobban, an art student who established a summer business called "Just a Little Something," displays Christmas crafts she designed and handâ€" crafted.
