Schneider wearing a butcher‘s apron, not a baker‘s hat. _ And rightly so. When J. M. started his business in 1890, he was a butcher, not ‘a baker. « That‘s why baked goodsâ€"to be introduced this fall by J.M. Schneider‘s recently formed umbrella corporaâ€" tion, The Heritage Group Inc., will not carry J.M.‘s name. f In an interview, Henry Beben , senior vice president of corporate development for The Heritage Group, said, "we‘d be bending the truth"‘ in using J. M. Schâ€" neider to promote new proâ€" duct lines in baked goods. **We could try to make him a jack of all trades and master of none,‘‘ he said, but added that would be unâ€" true, since‘ ‘"he was a masâ€" ter of butchery." Henry Beben, senior vice president of corporate development for The Heriâ€" tage Group Inc., stands in front of the company‘s headquarters located in the Major Holdings building, University Business Park, at Columbia and Albert Sts. &A Northdale Auto Body WENTWORTH PIONEER VILLAGE FREE PASS Child 12. or under accompanied by an adult. Schneider extended to proâ€" ducts unrelated to his oriâ€" ginal butcher shop. In order to maintain its current growth pattern, Beben said the company must diversify into other food areas. Therefore, The Heritage Group Inc. was formed in April, comprised of the J. M. Schneider Meat Division, which will continue meat production and a new subâ€" sidiary, National Consoliâ€" dated Food Brands Inc. (Natco Foods), which will market new food products. .Natco Foods will initially be responsible for three major product lines. The first will be frozen pastry shells for pies, tarts, hors d‘oeuvres and other baked goods, which will be sold under a brand name ‘"repreâ€" i e * enc senting oldâ€"fashioned high quality,‘‘ Beben said. © Consumers won‘tâ€" necesâ€" sarily be aware that Natco Foods‘ baked goods are reâ€" lated to J.M. Schneider, Beben said, unless ‘"we utiâ€" lize the strength of Schâ€" neiders‘‘ and include couâ€" pons for meat products in packages of baked goods." Natco Foods‘ third area of concentration will be cheese, which will continue to be sold under the J.M. Schneider label, since "he (J.M. Schneider) did have cheese in his butcher shop,"‘ said Beben . ‘‘Unique‘‘ frozen desserts, marketed under a label ‘‘*more current and repreâ€" sentative of the type of proâ€" ducts,"" Beben said, will be the second phase of product expansion. *‘*We‘re taking a good run at the Canadian cheese marâ€" ket,"‘ he said, adding that Natco is the only national Canadian company in the cheese business. Schneider‘s has been marâ€" keting cheese for a while, Beben said, but he feels the company was never able to give it enough attention. Natco Foods=plans to exâ€" pand the cheese line, inâ€" troduce new products, and embark onâ€"a strong marketâ€" ing campaign. All goods produced by Natco Foods will draw upon ‘‘the great strength in naâ€" tional distribution‘"‘ of J.M. Schneiders, Beben said. The new subsidiary will also keep its eyes open to acâ€" quire companies which "fit our thrusts,"‘ he said. Just recently, Natco anâ€" nounced it will purchase Mother Jackson‘s Open Kitâ€" chens Ltd. of Port Perry, Ont., which has been the exâ€" clusive supplier of meat pies to Schneiders. Meat pies will continue to be marketed under_the Schâ€" neider name. However, the product line will be expandâ€" ed to allow Mother Jackâ€" son‘s to grow into a major supplier for the Natco diviâ€" sion. Corporate offices for The Heritage Group, J.M. Schâ€" neider Meat Division and Natco Foods are now locatâ€" ed on the second floor of Major Holdings University Business Park at Columbia and Philip Streets.
