Her training took â€"six months and now, after two. years on the job, she can reâ€" pair or rebuild any brand of sewing machine. She is also planning to take an elecâ€" tronics course so that she can handle the compuâ€" terized models. _ Nancy has found that the skills she bas learned are transferable to other kinds of machinery, and so, in her spare time,, she repairs home appliances. The INTO Program asâ€" sists women like Nancy, to explore new areas of trainâ€" ing not usually considered by women. Most women in the work force are concenâ€" trated in clerical (office or sales), service (waitressing or cleaning), factory assemâ€" bly, nursing and teaching jobs. These occupations are often underpaid, overecâ€" rowded, or both. On the other hand, there are skilled jobs available which pay good salaries. ' During the first half of the program, students collect information about themselâ€" ves â€" what they like to do, what they are good at, what limitations they have in terms of minimum salary they can live on, location of work, and so on.
