At its June meeting last week, the University of Waâ€" terloo senate approved the offering a diploma (nonâ€" degree) for completion of courses in the occupational health nursing field. The diâ€" ploma will be. coâ€"ordinated by Waterloo‘s health studies department, beginning \ this September. $ ‘‘The department has been approached by nurses‘ association in the occupaâ€" tional health field,‘"‘ Dr. Allan Best, health studies chairman, reported to senaâ€" te. The provincial governâ€" ment is planning to certify occupational ‘health nurses and the proposed diploma for university level courses would serve this objective, he said. Dr. Best reported a "high level of interest" within the nursing profession in such a diploma, particularly if it could be completed on a partâ€"time, â€" correspondence basis. The diploma as proposed by UW will involve compleâ€" tion of 12 oneâ€"term courses, 10 of which are regularly ofâ€" fered already on the UW campus. These include courâ€" ses in human biology, prinâ€" ciples of behavior modificaâ€" tion, industrial psychology, report writing (an English course), organizational beâ€" havior, ergonomics (manâ€" machine relationships), disâ€" ease process, environmenâ€" tal health, epidemiology (of chronic disease), industrial hygiene, and occupational and environmental health and safety. He noted that while many of the courses will be offered by his deâ€" partment, a number of other departments on campus will be involved including bioâ€" logy, â€" psychology, systems design and management sciences., ® Dr. Best said the evoluâ€" tion of the diploma is, essenâ€" tially, a. consequence of change in society‘s concern over health problems. As inâ€" fectious and other acute disâ€" eases have been brought, inâ€" creasingly, under control atâ€" tention has turned to those problems that are more apt to be related to behavior and the environment, including coronary heart disease, cancer, lung disease, and so forth. Waterloo has considerable strength in the area, Dr. Best said. His department (health studies) has an inâ€" terdisciplinary concern with health behavior and disease prevention. The systems deâ€" sign department is conâ€" cerned with healthâ€"related problems involving people and machines, as well as inâ€" dustrial hygiene.
