Wilfrid Laurier Univerâ€" sity has gone through many changes since its beginning in 1911 as a Lutheran seminâ€" ary. The school was slated to be built in Toronto but Waterloo‘s large Lutheran population and an offer of five free acres of land by the Board of Trade changed that. <It was officially opened with four students. while quantities last per sq. ft. By 1914 the preparatory courses were separated from the theological courses and the school was called Waterloo College. In 1925 Waterloo College became affiliated with the Univerâ€" sity of Western Ontario. Waterloo Lutheran Uniâ€" versity was established in 1960 and began granting its own degrees. This ended a 35 year affiliation with the University of Western which saw 1,000 students graduate from Waterloo. Because it still operated both the colâ€" lege division and the seminâ€" ary, the University only reâ€" ceived half the operating grants of provincial univerâ€" sities and no grants for capiâ€" tal expenditures. In 1973 the school severed ties with the Church and became a public university, eligible for full grants.
