The bicycle doctor keeps those _ :# wheels _ _ â€"C spinning _ ‘ Business By Stewart Sutherland Chronicle staff writer When most people visuaâ€" lize the ultimate machine of the future the first thing most of us think of is the space shuttle. computers or the ominous ‘big brother‘ monitoring system. . But that‘s not the first thing that 26â€"yearâ€"old Malâ€" colm Kendall thinks of. His idea of the ultimate maâ€" chine is somewhat more down to earth. ‘‘The bicycle is the ulâ€" timate machine. It‘s the machine of the future. It‘s the only machine that you get more out of than you put in,"‘ Kendall said. "It‘s comâ€" pletely selfâ€"sufficient. It‘s evolved so naturally and hasn‘t changed in years. It went through a process of elimination. What wasn‘t needed was discarded." Kendall has gone through a process of elimination himself over the years beâ€" fore zeroing in on his preâ€" sent chosen profession as Waterloo‘s ‘bicycle doctor . a term he finds somewhat pretentious, but one that pretty well describes what he does. His jobs have ranged from printer, truck driver and clothing salesman to baker. photographer and presently a bicycle repairman. Why repair bicycles and why his own business when others are finding it increasâ€" ingly difficult to make a go of it these days? "I think it‘s time for peoâ€" ple to be more selfâ€"sufâ€" ficient and get themselves motivated. It‘s an age for inâ€" dependence. The only way to get ahead these days is to go out and do it on your own,"" he said. ‘‘If you take 40 hours of your own time and put it toâ€" wards anything. any enâ€" deavour that you initiate on your own. you‘re ultimately going to get more out of it than if you take the same amount of time and put it towards someone else‘s idea because you‘ll want a perâ€" 5‘â€"12‘ Paper Clump Birch _ *_** & European Clump Birch ........... 6‘â€"10° Red Maples ; §5â€"20° Norway Maples ....... ; Blue Spruce & Austrian Pine 210 4 â€"10° Pyramidal Poplars . k A 1‘â€"4‘ Privet & Alpine Current Spreading & Pyramid Junipers RR 1, Waterioo B Over 10,000 Trees from 2‘â€"20° Acres of Shade Trees, Blue Spruce Paper Clump Birch â€" Shrubs and Fruit Trees pean Clump Birch From $12 Red Maples From $12 Fruit Trees, Maples, Oaks, Walnuts, Lin Norway Maples From $6 _ dens, Locusts, Flow: Crabs, Mountain Ash ipruce & Austrian Pine 210 ... "Which brings us back again to the bicycle. There‘s no other form â€" of transportation where you can use as little energy and go as far and have as good a time." He views his new business not as a necessity for surâ€" vival and not a challenge. but more a labor of love. "It‘s a challenge in so far as in order to make a living at it you have to be quick. You have to be like a pit stop mechanic and do all the work fast because _ the biâ€" cycle business is a frivolous business." he said. : ‘*Most bicycle repair people are 16â€" vearâ€"olds and doing it on the side trying to work their way through adolescence. I do it because I love bikes ... I think they‘re beautiful. There‘s nothing you can do on your own that‘s more enâ€" joyable than bicycling." Kendall‘s personal preâ€" ference in transportation comes as no surprise. It‘s the bicycle because he claims it‘s the fastest way to get from one side of Waâ€" terloo to the other. but he suggests the city doesn‘t lend itself to the cultimate machine .. ~It doesn‘t really lend itâ€" self to bicycling. If you bend the rules a bit your moveâ€" ments aren‘t quite as resâ€" tricted as they would be if you were driving a car. There are always sidewalks. paths and gas stations you can cut through." he said ‘*The bicycle is definitely the way to get around and it keeps you fit which I think is the main thing.~ Kendall believes that biâ€" cycles can bring you closer to what‘s happening in and around the city in a way that ‘*When you‘re riding a biâ€" cycle you can see what‘s going on around you and vou‘re more a part of it. "I take it apart,. lubricate everything,. clean everyâ€" thing and make it look as new as possible and mainly I make it safe to ride. I set everything up so it‘s workâ€" ing properly. If you have to stop quickly. you‘ll be able to. When you want to change you‘re in a car you can isolaâ€" te yourself and drive right past. On a bicycle wou‘re a lot more involved and reâ€" laxed. It‘s a great way to beat stress." he sard. 664â€"2482 gears, you‘ll be able to proâ€" perly switch gears. Everyâ€" thing will work the way it‘s supposed to. A bike is really a very simple machine and that‘s the beauty of it. Kendall said. "It‘s a very simple direct connection beâ€" tween you‘ and the ground to get the most out of the enâ€" ergy you‘re expending.
