Biblical archeology lecture at WLU Chronicle no” writer Those who attend the University of Waterloo pro- duction called The Komagata Mam Incident - starting March 13 - will no doubt draw parallels between the subject matter and one of this era's moat controver- sial issues. though the story takes place before World War I. The Komgata Mam Incident dramatiaes the Cana- dian govemment's refusal to allow a boat load of Hindu exiles to land in Vancouver in 1914. The simi- larities between that incident and the recent con- troversy surrounding the igtfiuE of Vietnamese refu- gees are obvious. The play, written by Sharon Pollack, takes an in depth look at the tensions and bigotry and bureau- cracy that were rampant in Canada around the time just before the first war. I By the eariy l900's. the Canadian govemrhent be- lieved it had devised an airtight method to exclude Asian immigration from Canada. In 19M. the Koma- gata Mam. a Japanese steamer, altered Vancouver Harbor carrying SN potential immigrants from East India. , The majority were veterans of the British army and all were British subjects. As such, they felt they had right of entry by virtue of their membership in the British Empire. Despite that, Canadian immigration authorities re- fused entry. For two entire months the ship lay at anchor in Burrard Inlet near Vancouver while poli- tical, legal and racial skirmishes took place across the country. Meanwhile, the exiles aboard the Koma- gata Mam suffered much deprivation. In the fall of 1914, the Komagata returned to India leaving behind only about 20 passengers who could prove prior residence in Canada. The repercussions of the govemment's actions were drastic. Death and an execution took place aboard, a riot ensued, vigilante action was common. Despite the seriousness of the incident and the ensu- ing violence, the outbreak of, WW I overshadowed all and the Komagata Maru incident faded from the na- tional memory. _ " Only. recedtiy has it resurfaced in this thought- provoking theatrical performance. _ _ - The play is directed by' drama student Susan For- rest.
