A student rooming house located at 117 Albert St., Waterloo, received $50,000 damage when fire completeâ€" ly engulfed the â€"twoâ€"storey structure. Three of the eight occupants were in the buildâ€" ing at the time but all manâ€" aged to escape without inâ€" jury. The fire broke out just eight months after Council and the fire department jointly conducted a study into fire prevention stanâ€" dards in student boarding Charles E. (Chuck) Greb was chosen as 1978 Citizen of the Year by the Kâ€"W Jayâ€" cees. Greb had been inâ€" volved with the Kitchenerâ€" Waterloo Oktoberfest for approximately seven years. Three University of Waâ€" terloo students were caught in the middle of a "gas war‘‘ and spent five days without heat in their downtown Waâ€" terloo boarding house. The landlord failed to pay a seâ€" verely overdue gas bill and Union Gas cut its supply off to the facility. City _ treasurer _ Don Schaefer appeared before assessment court to appeal what the City and 89 resiâ€" dents felt were unreasonaâ€" bly high tax assessments. The appeal was successful, but Waterioo lost more than $10,000 in the process.
