Walteer MclLean would do a good job of representing us in Ottavya.A â€" Where did we, the Canadian voters, go wrong? Half a year ago we elected a new federal governâ€" ment under the leadership of one Joe Clark. Who‘s to blame for this unwanted election? All three of the political parties to a great extent. The government for governing like a majority when it only had a minority of the seats in parliament. _ Now, we‘re back at square one, facing another long, drawn out election campaign. The Liberals and the New Democrats for bringâ€" ing down the government, giving little or no thought to what the Canadian people want or need. Had either opposition party given that matter any thought, surely their leaders would have reaâ€" lized that an election is the last thing this country needs right now. Needed or not, the Canadian public is stuck with another election, so we should make the best of it. We can start by greeting this campaign as a chance to ask some vital questions of all candidates. No longer is it enough to ask ; how will you serve the constituency if elected? Will you represent your voters? We must also ask each and every serious candidate how they feel about issues such as Peâ€" trocan, oil prices, inflation, unemployment and so The last campaign in this riding didn‘t seem to be a trying one for the candidates. They attended their public meetings in ritual form, and answered shallow questions with shallow answers. We‘re stuck with an election the public didn‘t ask for. The least we can do is make the candidates work during this untimely campaign. A few years ago the assistant managing editor of the US Catholic Magazine wrote "whereas the true lesson of Christmas is a divine message of mercy and sacrifice. Santa is the front man for greedy corporations and the tutor in greed for mullions of American children He is the Saint ‘gimme‘. He has become a complete sellout to materialism and greed. He is in the pay of the big toy manufacturers and department stores. A greedy child is never appeased. A spoiled child appreciates nothing. An overindulged child is convinced that the major figure of Christmas is not Christ, but himself To the Editor: You will recall that Jesus said it‘s better to give than to receive. He also said "when you spread a dinner or evening meal,. do not recall your friends or your brothers or your relatives or rich neighbors. Perhaps sometime they might also invite you in return and it would become a repayment to you. But when you spread a feast invite poor people. crippled. lame. blind and you will be happy because they have nothing with which to repay you ~ (Luke 14:12â€"14) ~"Practice giving."
