MEMO 'm BOW. My indepth investigating informs me that the two weeks Kitchener Ranger coach Bob Ertel asked for Ito see an improvement in his club) is up as of today. In a Kitchener Record article, Ertel said it would take that g to turn things around since his club had been involved F50 many trades and time was needed for players to lami- arize with each other. Well, I like Bob a lot because he was the Kitchener B coach when I broke into reporting hockey with the Record three years ago, and he always shot straight from the hip, saying exactly what was on his mind. I've always found him to have a great wit (he must have a sense of humor in these trying times) and am the first to admit Rangers' problem does not necessari- ly lie with him. But it was a mistake for him to put a time limit on his club's per- formance turnaround, first because it added unneeded pressure all around, and se- cond, because Rangers aren't likely to get much better. I will not pass jud- gement because I have only seen them play twice this ear, and they won both mes, but the last game I saw against Sault Ste Marie was one of the most brutal (like that word, Bob?) exhi- bitions of hockey I have ever seen. Sault had about 60 chances in the Ranger end and in- competently humbled every chance. Rangers, meanwhile. apparently are destined to play Lottiaw's hockey for the rest of the year. No names. no frills, no action and they have to bring their own paper bags to put over their heads as they leave. The only good thing about Rangers dreadful season is that local sportscasters don't have to focus on Toronto teams any more as the big jokes. Although they still do. BARBS ABOUT BARBS: As was expected, the insults and locker room jokes were flying (so were the dinner rolls) at the WLU Quarterback Club dinner-roast in honor of Dave (Tuffy) Knight, head football boos who was recently named coach of the year by the Canadian Intercollegiate Athletic Union. The event was held at the Chicopee Ski Lounge last Wednesday and it was heartwarming to see many of Tuffy's former players and friends come out for the evening. But I was rather disappointed that many so-called masters stuck solely to locker-room variety humor merely substituting Tuify's name to attach significance to the occasion. I know that the roast was hastily arranged and many of the speakers did not know Tuffy intimately enough to go on and on with personal anecdotes. But I have known the man for the better part of this decade, seen him in the good times. and the bad times. the funny, the sad. and he has to be without a doubt one of the most infinitely colorful. enter- taming and yes. even eccentric persons I have ever met It seemed to me a shame that more time wasn't spent on Linings like his attitude toward winning. injuries. women's thletics. money and others. all which have gone into mak- ing him one of the most controversiaIIy-humorous in- diViduals around I give full marks to former Hawk star Jim Reid and Tuffy‘s assistant Rich Newbrough who during their speeches made an obvious attempt in this direction while conveying their affection for the man That is the idea of a roast. and while I'm not opposed to locker room humor.
