By Rick Campbell Chronicle Sports Editor That intangible word "pride‘‘ can do funny things in sports eircles. . â€" . It can help a good team play well. & It can help a bad team play well. But, as in the case of Wilfrid Laurier hockey Hawks, it can also motivate a good team that is playing badly to play better. It isn‘t that confusing. Granted Hawks.do not have the talentâ€"laden lineup that carried thm to the OUAA Western Division championship two of the past three years. But man for man, when compared to other teams in the 12â€"club loop, there is no way Hawks were as bad as the 1â€"5 record they carried into last Thursday‘s home encounter with frontâ€"running Guglph Gryphons. Perhaps a motivating factor in Hawks improved performance was that the players got together themâ€" selves earlier in the week to talk over problems, interâ€" nal conflicts, and even onâ€"ice miscues that had plaâ€" gued them in earlier contests. WLU had reached a low point the previous Saturday when they dropped a 2â€"1 decision to Windsor Lancers, generally regarded as one of the more hapless units in the league. But Laurier came out flying against the:somewhat startled Gryphons with solid physical contact, relenâ€" tless checking and slick. playmaking which allowed them to forge into a 21 first period lead: They were never headed after the two minute mark of the period, and only a questionable penalty call late in the game allowed Gryphons to exert the pressure needed to tie. For the first time, at least at home this year, Hawks received wellâ€"balanced contributions from all three lines. Particularly effective were centre Al McCrae, who caused incredible havoc in front of Guelph‘s goal as he does at all times with indefatigable forecheckâ€" ing, and left winger Greg Ahbe whose untiring twoâ€" way work with centre Dary} Benjamin and right winger Dan McCafferty created many outstanding scoring opportunities. Left winger Perrry Mark showed definite signs of regaining his scoring touch as he notched two goals. Ahbe and defenseman Paul McSorley also tallied, as did McCrae on the prettiest goal of the night when he simply rifled home a shot from the slot catching Guelph goalie Tom Hedican frozen stiff. ‘‘It‘s poor consolation for us to end up with a tie, I thought we definitely deserved to win,"‘ said Hawk coach Wayne Gowing. ‘"But the guys wanted to prove they could play much bettér hockey than they‘ve been playing and they came through tonight: You have to give them a lot of credit, they didn‘t get beat, they just got hurt by a couple of bad breaks (calls) in the third period."" _ ‘ & You‘ve heard it before: _ You‘ve got to walk before you can run. L It‘s true. SO 1@A S pzenee get Walk a blo« ntbhhtrail dadctiintrett At 1â€"5â€"1, Hawks are a long way from a playoff spot at the moment, but Gowing is hoping Thursday‘s efâ€" fort will be a constant reminder of how well they can play when they want to. + §# "I‘d like to think this is the start of some bettéf, . things to come. It certainly won‘t be easy from here on in,. but I can see ourselves in a real dogfight for fifth and sixth positsons.
