In other news, Narciso Yepes, considered one of the greatest classical guitarists of our time and the musical genius who invented the 10â€" string guitar, will play with the Kâ€"W Symphony on Saturâ€" day, Nov. 24 at 8 p.m. and on Sunday, Nov. 25 at 2: 30 and 8 _ _Born in 1927 in Lorca, southern Spain, Yepes began to play the guitar at the age of five. His early studies in Lorca were folâ€" lowed by courses in harâ€" mony, composition and the guitar at the Valencia Conâ€" servatory. He then studied with Vicente Asencio, a pianist and teacher of music, whom he credits with giving a new direction to his life. _ ‘"I learned to play the guiâ€" tar not from guitar teachers but from music teachers! Vicente Asencio, an adâ€" mirable teacher, made me suffer a great deal. He showed me at the piano what I was to play on my inâ€" strument. One day, for exâ€" ample, he told me to play my scales prestissimo, just as he did on the keyboard. ‘But that‘s impossible I said‘. ‘Impossible?‘" He banged the piano lid down angrily. ‘Then change your instrument if nothing can be done with that one!" he reâ€" plied. Yepes later realized that the reason why he couldn‘t play scales as quickly as a pianist was that, like all other guitarists, he plucked the strings with only two fingers of the right hand, whereas a pianist uses five fingers. He shut himself away for a month to inâ€" crease the agility of the three idle fingers of his right hand then went back and played the scales to Asenâ€" cio‘s satisfaction. This striving for better techniques eventually led to Yepes‘ invention of the 10â€" string guitar. Yepes made his concert debut in Madrid with his inâ€" terpretation of Rodrigo‘s famous "Concierto de Aranâ€" juez" in the Teatro Espanol Soon afterwards he began a With Every Water Softener Rented Receive AQUACCUN(S CLIP THIS AD 5 Bags of Sait (20 Kg. ea.) With the 10â€"string inâ€" strument it is possible to play all the repertory of the Twelve years later, after long and exhaustive study, he devised an instrument that overcomes the limitaâ€" tions imposed by the sixâ€"strâ€" ing model, but represents neither a break with tradiâ€" tion nor a lack of respect for the conventional guitar.
